Not sure how I feel about the Discoprise. On one hand the new design looks nice and is not a major departure from the TOS Connie. As others have stated, I get that some feel the designs from the 60's don't translate well into a series made in 2017/2018 and that the shows producers gave us a ship that looks modern yet pays homage to the classic ship.
On the other hand, it's clear now that Discovery is a reboot of the franchise. While it may be set in the prime universe, it's not the prime Trek universe established in the TOS and carried on through TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT. The ships are obviously not the same. The uniforms aren't the same. The tech is not the same. Really, except the names of a handful of planets and characters, there's very little that recognizable from the classic show.
That's not to say I'm unhappy with Discovery. I think it's first season has been way better than any of the other series, except maybe TOS. The production quality is outstanding. The characters are very good (particularly Stamets, Tilly and Saru). The stories have been fresh and interesting. All in all, I think they hit a home run with Discovery season one.
I just think that the shows producers should have been upfront in saying "Guys it's a reboot. We feel Star Trek is stale and we want to freshen it up. I know some of you will be pissed, but just give us a chance". I may or may not agree with their opinions (the producers), but at least I know they were being honest.
All that being said, I'm on board with Discovery and will be tuning in for season 2.
