USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

Memory-Alpha says he was born in 2195, citing the TAS episode he appears in.

Been a while since I seen it, so I don't know how they came to that conclusion.

"Commodore Robert April, first captain of the USS Enterprise, and for the past twenty years, Federation Ambassador at large. Now seventy five years old, Commodore April has reached mandatory retirement age." - Kirk's opening Captain's Log

So presumably the Enterprise is bringing him in at the end of the episode to hash out the armistice with the Klingons (which also neatly sidesteps having to show Pike/Spock).

Errrr. OK I'll stifle it. But we'd have the dead parrot jokes quoted til kingdom come on here :guffaw:

I'm sure Palin is entirely capable of playing it straight.

Of course, most of the time we've actually seen Robert April is in the novelverse, and of course that's not canon. But if DSC April is anything like that version, then Palin would be perfect. Friendly, charming, and just a bit eccentric. And at least one person agrees with me. ;)

Note that I would absolutely hate it if DSC April turns out anything like the Kelvin-timeline version (who has only appeared in the comics so far). That version is an asshole.

In the TAS finale, he was at the mandatory retirement age of 75. The episode is set in 2270, so he was born in 2195.

Thanks

I really don't think CBS are too fussed with ignoring or changing anything they want to. If it's in their interests to have a 21 year old superhunk Robert April, they'll do it.

Clearly Starfleet rescinds that mandatory retirement age by the 24th century since Admiral Mark Jameson is well into his eighties if not older during the Mordan IV incident. But yeah, it would make sense that April was a good ten to even twenty years older than Pike and well into his senior years by the time Kirk assumed command of the Enterprise.

Yeah, I almost mentioned that makeup. That rubber makes "The Deadly Years(TOS)" look like it had Oscar-winning prosthetics.

At the end of the "The Counter-Clock Incident," it's implied that the mandatory retirement age is outdated and unnecessary anyway, or at least waivable. Starfleet is reviewing April's appeal to remain in the service. Maybe he manages to get the mandatory retirement age wiped out altogether.

Kirk's final retirement at just 60 was likely because he'd no longer be in command of a starship. Officially he probably touted his advancing years and his crew breaking up and going off to pursue new assignments or their own retirement plans, but had Starfleet offered him the captaincy of the Enterprise-B he may well have taken it, even if it meant Spock and McCoy no longer serving at his side.

Kirk only retired because he felt he had no other options.

Ok, what I'm about to say is FULL SPECULATION on my part. Not from a source. But do you guys remember the rumor back in Sept. that Aiden Gillien had been cast in DSC?

https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/rumour-about-aiden-gillen-appearing.289656/

"Rumor: Aidan Gillen, actor well-known for the role of petyr baelish in game of Thrones, could play a key character or even the villain in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery.
According to the rumor, the actor may appear in the final episode of the first season of the series.
Source: an article published on moviepilot, and shortly after removed.
In anticipation of true confirmations, the news is to be considered only as a rumor."

Pike maybe? Garth?
I hope he's got bigger fingers now.
