USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

They wouldn't really need to put any old age makeup on her. Sarek was like 109 in Journey to Babel and he was looked fine with grey hair.

Nothing wrong with Retcons, I just seems odd they'd only think of the TOS one.

I'm not sure what you mean. My point is that an alteration to a prop or effect requires no more in-universe explanation than a change in actor.

Even if the show is retconning it, Scott and John did put some thought into how it could theoretically refit into the TOS version, which is interesting to me.

Mark Lenard wasn't exactly a young man in JtB (43) and 66 by TNG-Sarek. Jolene still looks pretty damn good and she's only 43 now. True T'Pol doesn't need to look as old as she did in E², but she would need to be older looking.

Just greying her hair a bit, maybe a few wrinkle lines under the eyes (she did go through a lot), and a less form fitting outfit, and she'd look (her age) like a middle aged Vulcan.

The question would be, is she retired from Starfleet and/or Vulcan service? Or has she continued on even as all her human shipmates have since died. The Federation was something she supported once Archer was able to start gathering the races together. Old man Archer's only been dead for a little over a decade. The younger members of the crew probably are dead now as well, or are should be rather feeble, and most likely die in the next ten to twenty years (assuming an average human lifespan of less than 140 years old.)

AFAIK, Jolene is mostly retired from acting. I would not mind seeing T'Pol, but why would they do it now?

This is from some 2017 TV Movie. Still acting, though not a lot, so wouldn't be a problem to book for STD :)

Until they do the Discovery Twist (tm) and reveal that she founded Section 31 because of Archer's anti-Vulcan sentiments and now works for a shadowy empire known as the Romulans, requiring Burnham to kill her in lirpa combat to save all of the universe.

You're forgetting how desperate this show is: They are going to not just show T'Pol, but have the entire Discovery crew go full on face-to-face with the Romulans. And then at the end of the season someone decides to classify how Romulans look, and entire crew and the writers will all pretend that never happened...

I wouldn't be surprised if we got a line about "Ambassador T'Pol" or somesuch. I'd be up for an appearance but it probably wouldn't happen.

Do you think they’re also planning on using the Borg? The whole “science vs. Faith” theme they’ve mooted for season 2 evokes the philosophy of the collective in my mind... I can totally see them doing what you suggest with the Romulans - and given that the Borg are quite well known outside of Trekdom (I believe) I don’t think DSC would be able to avoid them...

Actually, they'll probably just retcon the entirety of "Balance of Terror" to begin with, since after all this time it's quite absurd that the Federation fought an entire war against the Romulans -- at a level of technology we now understand from Enterprise as being close to what we're used to -- and never got a chance to examine a Romulan corpse. It's asinine to think that could even be possible, even if they did have standing orders to kill themselves to avoid captures.

OTOH, the novelization of Balance of Terror basically states that the Romulans were known to be "vulcanoid" even at the start of the episode and the only thing surprising about their appearance is HOW MUCH they look like Vulcans after all. It isn't a shock to the crew as much as it is just really unfortunate timing for Spock, who is in the middle of being harassed by Bailey (the new guy) for being an alien.

At this point, Balance of Terror needs a major redo anyway. Change phasers to torpedoes, rework the script so that it's Uhura, and not Spock, who actually tracks the Romulan ship (as in the original script and novelization) and rework the dialog so the only shocking thing about the cloaking device is the fact that the Romulans are using it, despite the fact that their ships historically have never been powerful enough for that.
