Unseen TOS....

Rough idea for an earlier Romulan warship. Instead of using a complete ring around the ship we could have two segments of a ring. And instead of painting an elaborate bird on the hull (which such a design doesn’t really lend itself to, structural details might suggest something avian.

This was a dynamite design. What's next, maybe the Federation's battalion or something smaller? Whatever it is it can't resemble anything from ENT.

Yes, after this I will be doing an Earth combat ship of which I already have a generalized idea. And, no, it won’t look like anything from ENT.

It would have been rather cool if illustrations or schematics of these kinds of ships had been flashing or alternating on Spock’s bridge overhead displays as he was giving his brief history rundown.

Yeah, that would have been cool. They showed Gary Mitchell speed reading in WNMHGB, plus later on, in "The Changeling", we saw Nomad flash up multiple images as it read the Enterprise computer for Earths' position.

Progress. I think this looks suitably pulpy, like it belongs on a sci-fi magazine cover. For the engine cowlings I took some inspiration from a Vostok rocket. I'm making it in scale with my previous design although this one should have a bit less interior space. And I think this ties in neatly with James Blish's generalized description of the early Romulan ships as "crazy little cylindrical ships."

I shortened the forward hull a bit to make it look more balanced. There is still more to go, but I think it's taking shape necely. Definitely looks more rudimentary and "primitive."

I
like to think these are the ships the Romulans first used to establish their fledgling empire. And this is what Earth ships first faced. The Earth ships of the period were better on a one to one basis, but in the beginning the Romulans had numerical superiority given most of the fighting would be closer to home and their supply line was shorter. The Romulans had invested in a massive ship building program for an extended period before they launched their campaign.

Even so the Romulans’ inferior ships would eventually take its toll as they simply didn’t have the speed and range of the Earth ships.

I can see the Romulans using swarming tactics as multiple ships attack individual enemy vessels. They could also become kamikazes where possible when their ships can no longer fight, in addition to blowing themselves up to avoid capture.

I love your concept, its both mighty and sleek at the same time. My only critique I have is the propulsion units, I think it would look less like a pre-exploration ship and more of a battleship if the units was smaller; to differentiate from the interstellar vessels which existed.

Ah, but the Lenin class is a pre-war exploration class repurposed into a battleship.

I'm working in some last detailing with largely the windows left to do. I am thinking of what sort of markings I could add to it for some added colour given I am not painting a large swath of the hull with some bird like creature.

A geometric pattern 'suggesting' feathers on top and bottom of the wings, without a whole bird? Essentially making the whole ship 'birdlike', and allowing Stiles' comment of ships painted like giant birds, without it being like the TOS whole bird emblem?

Similar to how I painted this design on the wings of an Aerotech miniature (yes, its upside-down deliberately) that I used in FASA Trek starship combat games...?

I've already added features to the hull that suggest something avian: the bow suggests a beak, the outboard pods are support by "wings" and there are physical details on the "wings" to suggest feathers as well as elements on the aft section suggesting tail faithers.

But I still like the essence of your suggestion. I gotta think about this. I want to try to stay within a design style that Matt Jefferies or Wah Chang could conceivably have thought of if they had been tasked with this.
