The Cage Landing Party Jackets As TOS Uniforms

“The Cage” gave a nod to the idea that landing parties likely often need specialized gear. In “The Cage” they had backpacks that disappeared when the series went into production. So did the field jackets. The tricorder seems to have replaced whatever was in the backpacks.

The loss of trousers on women was nonsensical. If you’re going down to an unknown environment wearing trousers makes more sense than wearing a skirt with exposed legs.

Star Trek: Picard brought them back:

Field jackets returned in TMP and variants were seen throughout the films. TNG and DS9 had some sort of alternate wear, but they weren’t field jackets like what we saw in “The Cage” and the films. The ones seen in later Trek looked more like an alternate fashion for duty wear.

I did this up many years ago.

Not really, since the leather jackets were used on regular shipboard duty. They're more akin to the Picardigan uniform variant from TNG or the Bomber Jackets we saw in the TOS movies.

The Gold Key Star Trek comics kicked off with the idea of field wear (and made Janice's giant weave a hat). They ditched the outfits but kept the backpacks for a while. Along with the canteens.

Avery Brooks had to wear four layers of uniform (jacket, vest, turtleneck, and undershirt) while filming the exteriors in DS9: "Rocks and Shoals." The weather was so hot during the shoot, they had stuntmen in Jem'Hadar outfits dropping from exhaustion and folks found the soles of their sneakers melting.

I can't even begin to imagine how much weight Avery lost sweating through all that shit.
I was filming a commercial at Atlanta motor speedway in summer… between the ambient heat and the heat from the asphalt, my sneakers melted the soles off and I had to be sent to first aid for early signs of heat stroke. Not fun. So I totally empathize with the film crew in these conditions

The inclusion of those jackets gave the idea of going into the unknown, of attempting to prepare for whatever is going to be down there. For me it adds a bit more realism, than simply beaming down as you are.

The problem with advanced technology that's indistinguishable from ordinary clothes is that a futuristic design tells the audience that the environment is cold, hot, or dangerous in some way. If it looks like street clothes, they might as well be strolling through the mall in the present day.

(In universe their enemies might underestimate the crew's power to their advantage, though.)
