Uniforms in the new series

Or they may just go with totally different uniforms and ignore "The Cage"/"Where No Man Has Gone Before" uniforms entirely.
Since it is set in the Prime timeline and not the Kelvin timeline, hopefully they will not ignore "The Cage""WHMHGB".

Even in the Prime timeline, they don't have to show those uniforms in DIS. Given how quickly Starfleet changes uniforms, with some only lasting a couple of years, the Discovery crew may never get to "The Cage/Where No Man Has Gone Before" uniforms.

True. Especially if Discovery has a special mission and never before seen uniforms.

God I hope they don't use the same designs as "The Cage"/TOS It isn't 1965 anymore, and those uniforms would look silly as hell now. Discovery is not a TOS fanfilm, and shouldn't look like one.

The Kelvin Timeline put a new spin on the TOS uniform theme, and managed to update them while keeping the design lineage. I hope that Discovery does something similar. Make them look fresh and new, but connected to the past. Not totally retro.

Was playing around with the pic of the Cage uniforms and came up with the slightly more TWOKish take on them spread across five departments:

Left to right is Medical, Engineering, Command/Tactical, Operations & Services, Sciences and Field (Engineer) Uniform.

Not the best I've seen on the board, but enough to get across the basic idea I think?

Well..no...

One of the very cool things that we get to do on this show is – we get to re-imagine all of the alien species that we’ve seen before in the series, and do something a little unique with that.

We were looking at a specific species’ costume on Friday, and Jesse Alexander, who is one of the writers, was commenting on the cosplay aspects of it, and how [the design] has gone a kind of quantum leap forward – and what were the people who do cosplay going to do?

Another one of our writers was like, “They are going to rise to the occasion!” So for all of us who have fetishized the look of all of the various species over the years of watching ‘Star Trek,’ it’s fun for us to put a new spin on old favorites.

[Uniform design will be] something completely different [from ‘The Cage’]. I think when you see the design, it’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that. We were having a wardrobe test the other day and it was interesting to think, ‘Now we need to take these colors and put them up against the [ship set colors],’ to see what is going to be the best-looking aesthetic for the show, taking in the sets and wardrobe and lighting style.

Or how slowly they change uniforms. The Cage-era uniforms continued to be used for over ten years, and there was significant overlap between uniform styles. Whatever uniforms they settle on for Discovery could have been in use long before the series started, with some ships in the fleet switching to turtlenecks.

Actually, I wonder sometimes just how uniform Starfleet's uniform regulations really are. DS9 was pretty consistent in using their jumpsuits for station-based personnel only, but the uniforms for the Generations crew were all over the place, while Voyager's crew all wore jumpsuits. After the First Contact uniform switch, DS9 regulars started wearing the new uniforms while still showing personnel from other ships rocking the TNG look! You could still spot the TNG uniform being used in the later seasons of the show.

Given the rapid fabrication technology shown as far back as Enterprise, uniform changes should be pretty rapid across the fleet if that was in any way a Starfleet priority. Instead I suspect that individual ship captains and maybe individual crew members are allowed to make their own choice of uniform, which could explain Discovery's threads if needed.

That's a bunch of dismissive speculation, not actual fact-based dismissal of/confirmation that his Tweet was a joke.

Unless Fuller himself or somebody else involved with the show has come out and said that he was just joking with that tweet, saying it's been "established as a joke" doesn't fly.

Come on. The shirts are a product already available for purchase. Of course it's a joke.

You can buy those shirts from gucci right now.

Unless they're purchasing those clothing items in bulk and repurposing them, which is entirely possible. Dismissing the thing as a joke out of hand without evidence that it actually IS a joke is premature.
