Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility be?

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

It may be fine with a few people...but I'm happy to let the "land of fluffy clouds and inferior acid" stay right where it is.

Women have been fighting for equal rights for a very long time. That fight continues to this day. The most basic right is the control of your own life. There are a lot of women who have plans for their lives that do not include motherhood. QUOTE]

If they feel that strongly about it then don't have sex.

It is not rocket science.

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

Until men can have children there will be no equality.
Excellent point.
When women can become pregnant without sperm then they should have complete control of their bodies.

Not before.

Deal with it.

When men can become pregnant then they should have the right to terminate their own pregnancy or not.

Not before.

Deal with it, Templar.

Oh I'm dealing with it.

By reliably supporting pro life elected officials with my vote(s) and my money so that one day this scourge will be a bad memory in the United States like slavery.

:guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:

Not hat I need to explain, but my husband and I are child-free (by our choice, imagine that!) :)

I can't wait to tell him that we need to stop practicing safer sex because our birth control might fail and we have no right to abort a zygote that neither one of us want and we take all the necessary precautions to avoid!

:guffaw:

I'm so very happy we don't live in your world Knight Templar! Though I have to thank you for the best laugh I've had all day...I can't have sex with my husband!

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

Not if you're having sex without the intent of procreating, no.

[televangelist voice]EVIL SINNERS![/televangelist voice]

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

Oh, please forgive me! I have sinned! I am a sinner!

There. I have admitted guilt. It must be ok for me to continue a loving sexual relationship with the man I married (with active plans to prevent procreation) now right? ;)

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

God is against sinning because sinning is fun. He's such a killjoy.

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

I do not have any problem with people who are against abortions because they view it as unnatural, potentially traumatic for women and a bad alternative to using contraceptives correctly. I might be weakly for abortion but I share a conservative concern about a potentially evolving culture which views abortion as just another contraceptive.

Yet what we witness here is the very opposite of the above view, a misogynist, 'do not have before marriage and do not use contraceptives' perspective that is not pro-life in any way but actually anti-life in the case of doctors who do conduct abortions. I think it is fair to label a political stance which advocates violence radical.

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

I reckon that's why religious right-wing folk are so intent on condemning the actions of others. Deep down they know they're missing out on harmless fun, so the need to make themselves feel superior. Sad, really.

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

I have no problems with contraception or married couples having sex anytime they want for any reason they want.

I'm still against abortion though.

I really hate people taking someones beliefs and positions and stretching them all out of recognition to fit their own preconceived ideas.

What business is it of yours if someone is married (or not)?

You would never accept my reasons regardless of what they were and you full well know it. So why bother.

Apparently, anything, any idea that restricts people from having sex is utterly appalling to many of the TrekBBS posters.

That's because who people are having sex with is no one else's business, provided all parties are consenting. Why do you hate freedom?

Except that that's not at all what radical means. Radical means contrary to generally accepted tradition or completely at odds with prevailing public opinion. Undesirable and radical are not synonymous.

What idea? If you can actually point out what harm is done when two people have sex with each other and use contraceptives wisely I am all ears.
Until then we do not talk about ideas and arguments but about forcing one's own sexual preferences down other people's throats.

I wouldn't claim that liberal logic is the only game in town as it has its limitations but most of the time you do fairly well by restricting freedoms, be it in social or economic matters, only if you can point out what harm is done by them.

Everything everyone does effects others in tiny ways because we live in an interdependent society.

The era where most Americans lived in isolated settlements and did not meet 100 people in their lifetime is over and has been for centuries.

"Why do you hate freedom" is a mocking, childish statement often used by ignorant posters who have no idea what they are talking about. I do not hate freedom.

But freedom without responsibility to use it wisely is its own kind of slavery. It is a slavery to the most instinctive and base desires people have and marks them as uncivilized savages and not a thinking, growing people.

Re: Unexpected/unwanted pregnancies: what should guys' responsibility

I have yet to see any evidence of that happening.

The vast majority of abortions in the US are elective and unrelated to the mother's health. Less than 1.5% of abortions are performed due to rape or incest, and about 25% are for health reasons (either concerns for the health of the mother, or the fetus.)

Statistics from here (and it has citations.)

That said, I don't think there is anything wrong with elective abortions. It would be preferable to have avoided the pregnancy altogether, but that's beside the point.

Why would you want to restrict them? Why does it matter to you what other people do?
