Uhura and Scotty, why did people hate the Idea so much?

Picard looks great in the monster maroons...... god, did the TNG uniforms suck IMO.
I don't view the supporting characters as extra baggage, particularly the only woman and only black person from the main cast. One of the criticisms levelled at TMP is often that it's too sterile with not enough personal interaction between the cast. There is a sweet spot.
I'm also fine with older people getting some action . IDIC and all that. If I want to watch young and thin people getting on, I can watch porn.
In real life all Sir Patrick's lady friends and ex wives are decades younger than himself.If there's one constant in the Universe ... it's Dirty Old Sods!

Well, I think it had the potential to fun, Old Uhura and Scotty seem like the couple who's house I'd wanna visit just for the banter....

Anyway I reckoned there'd be about 30 years between Saavik and Spock.
A problem I have with Scotty and Uhura is the bad writing for their "romance". It could have been written by Lucas himself it was that bad. Or perhaps by the writers of the T'Pol/Trip romance.
And the acting. I don't think any of the regulars were taking the script seriously except for the big 3. I think it was Doohan's worst performance.
If they'd done it properly, respectfully, perhaps with a bit of background I think everyone would have been happy regardless of their age.
Never had an issue with the idea, just came out of nowhere, never came to any kind of fruition, never had a basis in any other film and on top of that was never explored or hinted at again for the remaining film.

The "economy" of the scene where their "romance" is introduced makes it all so flat and uninteresting. They're both conveniently on the bridge at the same time, then -- out of the blue -- Uhura just starts pawing him. She also happens to have brought a bag of chips with her and kept it around as Scotty's "dinner" ... HA!!! A bag of Lay's potato chips -- how's that "dinner" especially to this Man? When Scotty considers dinner, a flock of Free Roam Chickens in the hold of the ship holds vigil.
As others have said, I dislike the idea because it's totally out of nowhere, and the two of them don't really have any chemistry together. Now, if they'd had Sulu reveal a long-standing interest in Uhura, that would've made sense. "The Naked Time" and "Mirror, Mirror" both imply that he might've had a thing for her.
But yeah, it's probably better to keep the TOS crew free of romantic entanglements with each other.

This is news to me that people had a problem with it. It also the thing that ended the running fear that if Scotty ever gets konked on the head and it's a womans fault he might kill her which was set up in "Wolf in the FOld." as a legit motive for murder. This time he gets konked on the head and a woman helps heal him thus erasing that condition from him.

The novel for STIII had Saavik "helping" young Spock out with his first pon-farr, hence the look of embarassment from Saavik at the end.
I may be oblivious, but I never saw the Scotty/Uhura banter on the bridge as flirty, or otherwise romantic. To me, it came off as warm, genuine affection. As Star Trek has pointed out on numerous occasions, these people were basically family. Because of this familial relationship which had lasted for 30 years or so at that point, I don't think a romantic relationship between any two would have been easily accepted.
The only reason I believe the Spock/Uhura relationship was accepted in the AbramsTrek was because 1. these were brand new actors in these parts, so all that came before was basically rewritten, and 2. it was early enough in their past that they didn't have a history of family between them.

I agree, but I read articles at the time which said there was an intention to imply she had a thing for him. It was intended apparently , even if I personally never read that into it. Tbh, they may have been STIII articles, trying to explain that they were building on the frisson in STII.
After STII, fans were theorizing that she was the secret daughter of Spock and The Romulan Commander.

The unsettling thing about seeing him making out with Marta was that the actress actually was only 16 or 17 when she did the episode.

The comics postulated that she was his adopted sister,raised by Amanda. Following Discovery, you can see this as a possibility.
I think if they had stuck to their guns with the half romulan thing, Saavik could have been more like Jaylah in Beyond , struggling with socialisation and anger management. However she would have been far more interesting than most of the main cast plus in 82, most movies did not go out of their way to makeshift female characters interesting .
