U.S.S. Kelvin pic! (and more -- large images)

Re: U.S.S. Kelvin pic!

It's interesting the way They (JJ & Gang) made the lights on the center console look like the Snake-Armed Viewers from Pike's Era.

It's a little thing, but I like it.

Re: U.S.S. Kelvin pic!

I should say the technology we have now. They have to balance the look and feel of technology today, and how we think it will look in the future, with the look of TOS. I will have to wait to see a more total bridge shot then that to really cement my feelings on it.

Personally, I'd place more emphasis on trying to keep the effects reasonably consistent with TOS than on trying to make them look futuristic from our modern perspective 40 years later. That's just me. ;) But it's too soon to tell much from these pictures, so I'll wait and see what else turns up.

Keep in mind that these guys are fresh out of Starfleet Academy, maybe not even fully commissioned officers, yet. Why would you expect them to have the same rank insignia as they do in TOS?

Well, that's certainly how they look in these pictures. Is Kirk supposed to be a captain at this point? The guy at the helm (Sulu or Chekov?) has one stripe, which would make him a lieutenant. And the guy in blue would be a full commander, even though McCoy was only a lieutenant commander in TOS.

* shrugs *

The only time we saw anything resembling a cadet uniform in TOS was in "Shore Leave" with a starburst as the insignia. These uniforms look very similar to the officer ones from TOS, and they look pretty good.

These guys are not fresh out of the Academy, at least not in that shot. They could not all be fresh out of the Academy at the same time!

We know at least part of the movie covers the TOS time frame, so they would have to have their TOS ranks during that segment.

On closer examination, I see some braid on Sulu's sleeve, and something like 2 braids on McCoy's.
Well, its almost certain that Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are fresh out of the academy. I doubt very much that the younger, lower-ranked crew members from TOS would've been in an earlier class.

And where did you read that this movie will take place, in part, in the TOS timeframe?

Re: U.S.S. Kelvin pic!

Is Kirk supposed to be a captain at this point
Maybe by emergency default. It was my understanding that Pike (Bruce Greenwood) is nominally the captain of the Enterprise during this film, but at some point Kirk is forced to assume command.

I'm sorry, but Uhura, Sulu and Chekov couldn't possibly be in the same class as Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scott. Unless this story is a complete reboot and Kirk's command crew is more of a Scooby-style gang ala Buffy, then the shot we're discussing is probably from the TOS time frame (which is something I'm certain I read here somewhere, many months ago).

Maybe some people are saying this looks like a Sci-Fi channel movie because it's quite well lit. I like that. It doesn't try to look like an Alien knock off with metal grating floors and low ceilings.

I wonder if that bridge is some kind of simulator..........Still i am totally loving all these new photos, my backside will firmly be seated on a cinema seat on release day for this movie.

Wow. These pictures look pretty cool. I'm pumped. The new bridge looks great. I mean, if we can accept that Kruge's BOP has a different bridge design between TSFS and The Voyage Home, we can accept the bridge difference between Trek XI and Where No Man Has Gone Before.

My only concern. Is anyone else getting a Shinzon/Nemesis (shudder) vibe from Nero? I am :(

John Cho looks convincing as Sulu.
Anton Yeltin looks convincing as Checkov... So much so that I already want to slap the shit out of this guy.
Pine looks like Matt Damon
Pegg looks bored. I still wish Paul McGillion got that role.
Whoever is McCoy looks too much like Joey from Friends as someone else pointed out... It could be worse, he could look like Ross.
Uhura is hot.

Whats up with these uniforms? They ought to replace the Starfleet logo with the Underarmour logo.

Re: U.S.S. Kelvin pic.... AND MORE!

According to MTV.com, that IS the Enterprise bridge, folks.

Re: U.S.S. Kelvin pic!

new bridge is going to take some time getting used to. still wondering why Kirk has a black top instead of a gold one. guess he earns it later maybe?

Re: U.S.S. Kelvin pic!

I expect that Kirk is simply wearing the black "undershirt" part of the two-piece tunic (rather than having black collars, the new uniforms are black shirts with colored pull-over outer tunics). Presumably he lost his "overshirt" at some point a bit earlier in the action.

One thing I very much like about the new bridge is that it's brightly lit and light in color - although the earliest episodes of TOS featured a darkened bridge, throughout most of the series it was as well-lit as the TNG Enterprise bridge. I loathe the darkened sets of later Trek and the Trek movies, so to me this is good. :) :techman:

It all looks so very Phase II. (not the fanfilm, the old Syd Mead renderings from the 70s) Anyone else getting that vibe?

Re: U.S.S. Kelvin pic!

Someone who saw the bridge earlier in the year...I think it was someone at AICN, said the same thing about the Ipod look. He said that it looked like someone at Apple got their hands on the thing.

Yeah, I kind of had the same reaction. I'll keep an open mind, but I have to admit I'm not entirely comfortable with either the bridge pic or the Kelvin pic. The bridge looks far too futuristic, something which I felt ENT did better.

Well I think they have to have a balance between what was seen in TOS, and what we know now. I mean the bridge to me isn't perfect, and I have some issues with it, but I think we need to see a bigger picture, or a more complete picture to see really what it looks like. I think it will grow on me.
I think he is upset there are no jelly bean buttons.

I love the captain's chair. I like the single-display workstation overheads -- I've been wanting that change for years. Pine oozes Shatner from all the right places. I'm not happy about the rest of the bridge. It's too overwrought. Too many winky-blinkies. And what's the deal with leveling bright lights in a user's face at those stations?

In a lot of ways, these images smell of "Hollywood design" rather than practical design.

And will someone please tell Mr. Quinto that isn't the proper way to do a Vulcan neck pinch? You can take the actor out of Sylar, but you can't take Sylar out of the actor.

I've been saying for months here that anyone who really expected this film to look like TOS in terms of the bridge design, ship exterior etc was going to be shocked when the visuals were revealed.

Well, here you are. The uniforms are the single element that will most resemble TOS.

That said, all of this captures the vibe of the original series really nicely - "futuristic" in the way that term used to be used in the 1950s and 60s, bright and colorful.

I'm really happy so far. Now for the new Enterprise exterior...
