Aside from the horrible writing quality, only surpassed by Dan Brown's literary ineptitude, this is the crux of the problem with the novels. Bella is a weak, 19th century-style, heroine. She has no redeeming qualities for a 21st century world and is impossible to treat seriously as a protagonist.
Her current counterpart, Sookie, on the other hand is an emotionally strong-willed, intelligent, independent woman who takes charge of the situation rather than waiting for her vampire lover to do it for her. BTW, that series also takes time to deal with the problems of having a relationship of this type (the immortality aspect, not just the monsters and situations the characters get thrown into).
