Trek XII Will NOT Be A Remake

Indeed, I doubt there were very many scripts for a fourth season. The few that did exist probably ended up becoming TAS episodes or Phase II scripts, which themselves were converted into TNG episodes.

There was D.C. Fontana's story about Joanna, McCoy's daughter -- "The Stars of Sargasso". I think she got pretty far into that one. (Of course, she had a head start, having originally written Joanna into a story called "Joanna" that evolved instead into "The Way to Eden".)

So...did anybody notice in one of those press releases lately that it was said Paramount has officially slated the sequel to open July 4th weekend, 2012 -- on June 29, IIRC? I apologize if this is common knowledge, but I haven't noticed a post made about it yet.

The June 29 date was tentatively announced back on the 8th, and confirmed by Paramount three days later. As far as I know, that still stands, but that day's a long way off, yet, and could be subject to change. It does seem like they might be going for big opening-weekend numbers by slotting it there.

I read somewhere (a part of me died) that they are seriously considering the BORG. Please no! The Borg were TNG and VOY and they had a movie (FC). No BORG.

the were also in ENT ;)

and I concur: please, no BORG!

I say: Go ahead, do the Borg.

What? The Borg are cool villains, and if Abrams and co. want to do a movie around them, then they should go right ahead. They're an element from the later series in the franchise, sure, but it's all too easy to explain their presence (especially since they don't have canon timetables to worry about a la ENT) and they'd doubtless make a formidable adversary.

Of course they could also screw up and result in a terrible movie, but you can say that about any idea.
Really, people's reactions to this seem almost identical to the idea of Trek XI.
Indeed. Likewise nothing wrong with bringing Khan back.

I'm glad a remake isn't in the cards.

Khan belongs to the old timeline - his characterization and portrayal in the TOS and TWOK was great - and doesn't need rehashing/rebooting. I wouldn't expect Abrams to re-imagine the time-line, to then be slavish to events/characters in the Prime universe.

:) Fresh start - new continuity - "to boldly go where no-one has gone before"

;)

Trekmovie just posted a new interview with Abrams's Cohorts here. In it they discuss all manner of nonsense, but of particular note, while touching upon their plans for Trek XII they say this:

Orci: We would never do a remake….it will be some time in the five year mission. But that is a question. Should we pick them up immediately the next day or should it be later, we are still discussing that.
So there we have it, the much fabled TWOK remake will not be happening for Trek XII. I got to say, this has me relieved and almost give me the impression these guys know what they're doing.

Anyone else have thoughts they wish to share on this matter?

I agree. Though, Star Trek XI already assured me that they know what they are doing.

After seeing some of the excised footage from the first one, I'm hoping for Klingons. If not that then the Gorn.

^ They could use the script described here.

Scroll down to where it says "That new treatment begins with a darkened and lifeless Enterprise..."

It would take some reworking, of course, but I always thought this would make a great film.

If Khan is in it, it's a remake. Almost doesn't matter how the story goes. Second Trek movie with Khan? It's a remake. He's not gonna get out of stasis, be nice, and exit stage left. Whether it's a remake of "Space Seed" or TWOK, it's a remake.

They should also include the Borg is some half-assed way.

What would it be remaking?

Soooo thankful for this.

If you want Wrath of Khan, go watch Wrath of Khan. It's that simple. I'm pumped for something new!

Gerrold's observations there about Roddenberry versus the network/studio are well made. He may have inadvertantly cursed Paramount by praising its successful track record, though, since this piece was written in 1999 and the studio was just about to begin a long skid downhill.

But as everyone around here is so eager to point out to me, that type of film just doesn't work for the modern sci-fi audience.

Yes I did. What would they be remaking just by using Khan? Khan will do whatever the writers want him to, and because of legalities and the fact that they probably don't want to have to license/pay a bunch of stuff to CBS, I doubt a remake is in the works, yet they can use Khan however they want to. Khan needn't have to be someone trying to take over the Enterprise, Khan need have to be someone seeking revenge against Kirk.

Good. I wouldn't mind Kahn in the movie, as long as it was different then before.
