Wow, I was starting to think this day would never come.
Skimmed the startrek.com article - sounds like the series "is not related to" JJTrek. But as we all know, all these Treks are related to each other.

It's produced by the guy who wrote produced the 2009 movie and Into Darkness. It's going to totally be related.

And it looks like it will be on CBS's streaming service, which runs $6 a month.

On one hand I'm excited but on the other hand I don't have a lot of confidence seeing someone from the "new" Star Trek team is producing it. I actually didn't seriously think we'd get a new series until the next decade.

I wonder if this means the future films are in doubt? Last I heard, Trek 4 (14) was in the pipeline with the same cast, Kirk n Spock.

Great news! Although I'm not sure how crazy I am about the episodes only being available via CBS's streaming service.

    I wonder if this...

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

...means it'll be syndicated on 'regular' TV too.

I'm guessing a different crew still set in the Abramsverse.

    Then I'm not watching.

On the Star Trek OS press release it says they are returning to the storytelling of old. Social themes, etc. Well, I can't say how much faith I have in that with a clown like Kurtzman on board. THis guy doesn't know Star Trek or understand the fans at all. He only understands a section of them, and the division in fandom caused by the reboot, especially Into Darkness, is a testament to that.

If this goes back to Trek's roots and tells original, intelligent stories in the prime universe then I'm in. If this is JJverse and/or another rehash then they can shove it where the sun doesn't shine as far as I'm concerned.

I think in the US, you have to have CBS All Access. What else to they have? I hope they don't jack up the price to pay for this.

You do realize that the portion of the fandom that hates the Abramsverse that much is a pretty small portion, right?

Anywho, the goal is to expand the fandom, not to continue to cater to a shrinking fanbase.

Given the star power in the cast and the fact that they have failed in the long term to generate interest in the larger franchise, I'd say it's inevitable their days are numbered, even if they do a fourth or even fifth picture.

    It will...
...which sounds to me like a spinoff series featuring a new cast. So, not nuTNG or nuDS9 or whatever. And not a reboot of the Star Trek universe (either of them), nor featuring Kirk and crew (outside of cameos).

It could be the future (post-23rd century), the past (Enterprise era, the time between Enterprise and JJ films), or the present (early 2260s). It could be a post-Hobus time period in the original timeline (2380s/2390s and beyond), if Kurtzman wants to insulate himself from any deviations made by the Abrams films and pander to those nostalgiac for the post-TNG era.

Or it could be the far enough into the future to be vague on exactly where it takes place.

It's too early to tell, from what I've seen. And they'll probably be very vague on details for at least the next few months.

I think online television is a promising platform for Star Trek's future. I'm a little worried about the team behind it but otherwis, this is very good news. I'm glad CBS is smart enough to realize that Star Trek should be back on television.

Which isn't true as there's been a spike in sales when each film comes around. The Abrams films have generated interest in the greater Trek franchise.
