Trailer 3 Discussion Thread

There are plenty of TV-MA shows on basic cable, premium cable, and streaming services, but I could not think of any on broadcast TV (TV that does not require cable, satellite dish, or internet to be seen). Here is a list of cable and streaming TV-MA shows:

Someone mentioned the old Howard Stern show on CBS was TV-MA, but that was on late night, which is a little different than putting a TV-MA show on a broadcast channel before the 11:00 news.

So you don't want families watching Star Trek together, or at least having the show be accessible to at least teenagers?

I plan on watching Discovery with my ten year-old. It just gives me teaching moments for him about the differences between entertainment and the real world.

But, the original Star Trek was never family fare. Seriously, think about all the death and destruction that went on, not to mention three attempted rapes.

Yeah I'm looking at it from personal experience and watching TNG when I was 4. Still, I understand what you mean with the original not really being for young kids. It was the second to last series I actually watched in it's entirety, and that was in my teens.

I started watching the original when I was 4. Many, many moons ago. :techman:

As I posted else where (I can't remember where) even the modern shows weren't free from overt violence and gore. "Cold Station 12" (Enterprise) featured numerous murders, including one stuck in a specimen chamber who dies while bleeding from various orifices. Doctor Lucas is beaten to a bloody pulp. Smike is murdered with a Klingon disruptor.

You can find many, many examples throughout the franchise of overt violence and gore.

TV-MA is more like MPAA R. TV-14 is basically the TV equivalent to PG-13. Even so, we have already discussed examples of TV-14 shows that are more brutal and bloody than typical PG-13 movies. So how much more graphic does ST-Disc need to be to warrant an MA?

But in effect, a TV-MA TV show will not be as bad as an R rated movie, it's still a different rating scale. But even so, there are plenty of TV-MA shows that are not GoT level violent or bloody, and I don't expect DSC to be.

Ratings have also changed a lot since the '90's.. I was looking at VOY's Initiations the other day and thought: wow, hard to imagine this was family entertainment back then... it's actually pretty dark stuff, about child killings no less! It's a different climate these days, and I wonder if Initiations would have been considered PG now....

Agreed. And, guessing here, I think they're using more as a marketing ploy than anything real that will be onscreen. I'm sort of expecting it will be like The Expanse in tone. That's not really too graphic in any sense.

STDsc will be the "Torchwood" and "Class" of this franchise.

The Kelvin Timeline movies (if they continue) will be "Doctor Who," as it were.

Heck, South Park is TV-MA, as is Fargo. I think mostly because of language and situations, but Fargo also (once in a while, but not regularly) includes a little graphic violence (but not really overly-graphic). I also don't think I every heard an F-bomb on either show.

I can't believe it's TV-MA. I'm extremely disappointed. :weep:

I would say devastated, but I have to remember its just a TV show. The only way I could watch it now is on my phone with headphones. My only Star Trek viewing partner is my 12 year old daughter.

What makes you think this? It's the new flagship of the franchise. In fact, for the time being, it is the franchise.
I just meant that this is the more grownup-oriented iteration of the Trek franchise. I didn't mean to imply anything negative. I thought those shows were just as popular as Doctor Who while catering to mature audiences instead of a general viewership.

Ah, fair enough. I interpreted it as meaning 'largely unsuccessful and ill fated spin off'. Torchwood never exactly got rave reviews, Children of Men aside, and although I liked Class, it wasn't really successful or popular.
My apologies for misunderstanding!

I just finished watching the first six episodes of The Tick which is rated TV-14. They said "fuck" multiple times in probably 4 of the 6 episodes, and one episode had some brief graphic violence. Really curious about how Discovery ended up with a TV-MA. Regardless, I'll probably still let my 8 and 6 year-old watch. They watched The Tick with me.
