Still not sure why the rating matters to a bunch of grown-ups?
So you don't want families watching Star Trek together, or at least having the show be accessible to at least teenagers?

All that took me to was a general description of the ratings.
I plan on watching Discovery with my ten year-old. It just gives me teaching moments for him about the differences between entertainment and the real world.
But, the original Star Trek was never family fare. Seriously, think about all the death and destruction that went on, not to mention three attempted rapes.
Yeah I'm looking at it from personal experience and watching TNG when I was 4. Still, I understand what you mean with the original not really being for young kids. It was the second to last series I actually watched in it's entirety, and that was in my teens.
But in effect, a TV-MA TV show will not be as bad as an R rated movie, it's still a different rating scale. But even so, there are plenty of TV-MA shows that are not GoT level violent or bloody, and I don't expect DSC to be.TV-MA is more like MPAA R. TV-14 is basically the TV equivalent to PG-13. Even so, we have already discussed examples of TV-14 shows that are more brutal and bloody than typical PG-13 movies. So how much more graphic does ST-Disc need to be to warrant an MA?

This is true with The Expanse as well. That makes sense. Even an episode of Mad Men had an instance of the F-bomb muted on cable but audible on home video.

Agreed. And, guessing here, I think they're using more as a marketing ploy than anything real that will be onscreen. I'm sort of expecting it will be like The Expanse in tone. That's not really too graphic in any sense. But in effect, a TV-MA TV show will not be as bad as an R rated movie, it's still a different rating scale. Heck, South Park is TV-MA, as is Fargo. I think mostly because of language and situations, but Fargo also (once in a while, but not regularly) includes a little graphic violence (but not really overly-graphic). I also don't think I every heard an F-bomb on either show. But in effect, a TV-MA TV show will not be as bad as an R rated movie, it's still a different rating scale. What makes you think this? It's the new flagship of the franchise. In fact, for the time being, it is the franchise.STDsc will be the "Torchwood" and "Class" of this franchise.
I just meant that this is the more grownup-oriented iteration of the Trek franchise. I didn't mean to imply anything negative. I thought those shows were just as popular as Doctor Who while catering to mature audiences instead of a general viewership. What makes you think this? It's the new flagship of the franchise. Ah, fair enough. I interpreted it as meaning 'largely unsuccessful and ill fated spin off'. Torchwood never exactly got rave reviews, Children of Men aside, and although I liked Class, it wasn't really successful or popular.I just meant that this is the more grownup-oriented iteration of the Trek franchise.
