Trailer 3 Discussion Thread

I never believed for a second DSC would feature gratuitous sex or violence, despite the rumours flying around awhile ago. Now it's rated TV-MA (that's Mature Audience, for anyone unfamiliar with US TV ratings. As high as it goes), and I have no idea what to expect!
I wonder how much the open relationship between Stamets and Dr. Culver be the cause?

The corridors in that Burnham / Lorca scene are a lot brighter than what we've seen before. Maybe reassuring to some of you...

Loved every second of this..! More and more I'm excited for this..! Love how all the pieces will fit together like a jigsaw puzzle when we finally see the pilot!

Interesting to note, it seems that the Klingon (I think its Klingon) ship is decloaking because the Europa is ramming into it. Maybe its an accident? The Europa flies into it because it doesn't know it's there.
I highly doubt it. In the second trailer, we see Burnham running through deserted corridors of what may be a federation ship, she jumps into a shuttle and they leave in a hurry. I suspect Burnham may have set the ship (with no apparent crew members, all the known Starfleet cast are associated with Shenzhou, Discovery or both) to collide deliberately. Mudd was also talking about things going boom, which may or may not be related.

I'm much more convinced now that Burnham spends at least some of the pilot in silver division colours - before I wondered if it was a trick of the light but in that trailer she's stood next to Lorca in the same shot and their division stripes are definitely different colours.

I just spotted the same thing - which will make me stop squinting at the previous trailer now!

But I reckon she's demoted or changed back to her speciality when she transfers. If this starts with Shenzhou and she moves over to Discovery, then there's clearly a demotion (or at least, a lack of available command position)

I like what I see. I'm still a bit more unease about what we don't see.

There are more shots of the Europa in this trailer than of our main ship Discovery.

I take it they use the same corridor set, but with different lightning, to perform as different starships.

The "dark blue" corridor is on the Shenzhou. This scene, bright, white lit corridor, is probably set on the Discovery. The same way TNG used the same TMP-corridors for different Federation starships or starbases.

So in all the trailers we've only seen one shot of Discovery? I really wonder if we're just going to get to see the actual ship like midway through the season or at the end of the season. There has a be a reason they are hesitent to show the Show's namesake, right?

I'm also not sure if I like the TV-MA rating. As someone who became a Trek fan when he was 4, it seems like they should have at least given it a TV-14 rating, even though who focuses on ratings these days.

I'm guessing most of the footage is from the pilot. And, given what little we know of the plot, I'm guessing Discovery doesn't actually show up until the last few minutes. They're probably not revealing much to preserve the dramatic effect.

Nice trailer! Exciting times.

I, too, noticed that she wears Science Silver in the scenes with Lorca. I wonder though, why she isn't wearing her badge.

Yeah right, because we all know a gay couple means lots of steamy gay sex.

Or maybe she fills the role of both, science officer and first officer, just like her stepbrother.

Since the badge clearly has rank (since we nicked the stripes), and she's probably still considered a non-ranking Starfleet Officer in the scene with Lorca it makes sense they wouldn't allow for her to wear rank on a uniform until she's formally brought onto the ship or cleared back onto Active Duty by Starfleet Command. All in all a good trailer. Liked more of Lorca in it, but Green's dialogue was very dry. Hopefully merely bad editing on CBS' part.

When it comes to the MA rating, a lot of the basic cable shows on channels like FX and Syfy are rated MA. The Strain, The Expanse and The Magicians are all MA and they're still very tame when compared to the kind MA stuff on premium cable. So just because it's MA doesn't mean we'll be getting tons of nudity, sex, f-bombs, and graphic violence. I'd pretty much expect something at about the level of the shows I listed.
