TOS original or Remastered, which is canon?

The new effects do not alter the stories whatsover. In some cases, they actually enhance the experience- for me, anyway, and that's all that counts.

However, for nostalgic reasons, the old effects will always have a spot in my heart.

"Acceptable" is silly in a context where we're not given a vote. Both of these versions exist - on the same discs, and on the same basis. Both are canon.

I hope you're ok. Nice comment about the old having a place in your heart. How I feel about Star Trek in general. I would argue the new effects change the character of a major character: the Enterprise, herself. I know in my head she travels at warp speed, but usually she "flies" stately, like a tall-masted ship. She seems firm and dependable. In the new Doomsday Machine she swoops and darts, more fighter-esque. So that raises a small canonicity question, and also, very subtly changes how the Ent "feels" to a viewer of the new.

I think they're both just fine as far as "canon" is worth.

As others have said, the new effects haven't altered the story at all in any episodes I've seen, which is most of them. I'm honestly surprised some people are this rankled about the whole thing. I thought they were slavishly faithful to the original effects, or at least the intention of the originals.

These were done by people who know Trek and went way out of their way to avoid complaints like some of those I've seen. It would have been really easy to just do what Lucas has done and slap up whatever they thought was cool.

That's why I'll never get the hate. People often complain about how Trek producers don't listen to the fans. TOS-R is probably the project that had fans in mind more than any in Trek history. It astounds me that anyone would complain. Especially when they're serving up the originals right along side and not passing judgment as to which is "better."

While we sympathize with their feelings, we also recognize that those individuals will never be happy, no matter what we do. We are happy that so many fans seem to have enjoyed the new effects, and we are even happier that CBS seems to have achieved its goal of making the original series more accessible to a new generation of viewers.

Question: were you tempted to put a baby horta behind Vanderberg at the end of DITD?

Thing is, on this board (like most others) you get extremes- peeps who's world has been rocked by the new FX (that would be ME), and purists that find it blasphemous.
The rest of the WORLD that sees the new FX will range from peeps that don't understand quite why Trek looks better than they remember to less hard core fans that just plain *like* seeing a more detailed Enterprise.
In short, Mike, most of the peeps you've pleased you will never even hear from.

Thanks for the reply, Mike! I always like to hear from the people involved with these things.

I kind of took it for granted that the original effects would be included on the BD but I guess some guys at CBS might not understand how important that is. Good to know that you guys went to bat for us on that issue. I love the new stuff quite a lot but one of these days I'm going to have kids and once I hook them with the new versions I want them to see it the way I saw it for the first time.

Like I said, people can say what they want about the final result (it's subjective after all) but nobody in their right mind could claim you guys didn't care.
