TOS Bridge Crew: Cat-Person or Dog-Person?

If the other bridge are alternatively "dog" people or "cat" people, I guess M'Ress would be a...

..."people" person. :D

(Narrowly avoids the rotten fruit and veggies thrown my way.)

Spock: cat person (see: assignment earth, the trouble with tribbles. that being said I think he likes animals
Heh, I had a similar thought, when thinking about which way Uhura would lean.

1. McCoy: doesn't strike me as a pet person, so neither
2. Scott: dog
3. Sulu: dog
4. Chekov: cat
5. Uhura: cat

Hm, mostly agree, except I could see McCoy with a dog. I also think Scotty is possibly a cat person, he strikes me as the indoorsy type. I could totally see him cuddled up with a cat and a good technical manual.

Well, if you wanna go by Generations, Kirk had at least one dog.

Also horses.

Didn't see a single cat or scratching post in his Nexus dream.

In Harold Livingston's rough draft script for "In Thy Image," McCoy is first seen treating a wounded cheetah's paw in a public park. Kirk approaches him and the dialogue is as follows:

KIRK: Those cheetahs never pay their bills, Doctor.

The Man laughs, turns fully INTO THE CAMERA. And We SEE the Man is:

MCCOY

as he realizes it's Kirk and the laugh trails off. Yet there's no doubt but that they're both very pleased to see the other. Perhaps they're afraid they'd be over-emotional if they let their true feelings surface.

KIRK: So you came down from the hills.

MCCOY: (shrugs) Just passing through.

They shake hands. And then, study each other. They're both awkward about this meeting. For five long years of the starship mission, they were so close to each other. Now they feel almost as strangers.

MCCOY: (continuing) Well... how've you been?

KIRK: Three letters -- no answer.

MCCOY: The fact I didn't write... was my answer.

Another hesitation. Then Kirk tries to lighten the moment with a grin.

KIRK: They call you what? The 'animal doctor'?

MCCOY: (nods) The only sensible patients I've ever had.

KIRK: You could always heal anything, Bones. Remember... what did they call it... the Horta? You patched her up with silicone cement.

So McCoy (or at least this version of McCoy) is pretty obviously an animal guy, which seems in character for a curmudgeon like him. I'd say he likes them both, but he's more partial to dogs.

I'd say Kirk (like William Shatner) is a dog guy. Kirk's dog Butler in GEN was named after a dog of Shatner's who'd passed away. (Replacing the name of one of the writer's dogs, IIRC.)

Spock is a cat person. He's too aloof to be anything else, and of course there's the whole pet Sehlat thing. Which is why Spock & McCoy fight like cats and dogs. ;)

Uhura would be a cat person, too. I haven't read them, but I believe there are a couple of novels that have her interacting with cat-like alien races. (Uhura's Song and Tears of the Singers, IIRC.)

Scotty seems like a dog guy. He's very down to earth. So's Chekov. Just a gut feeling.

Sulu, I don't know.

People who really love animals probably don't volunteer for duty on a Starship in Kirk's day. Wouldn't expose a civilian or pet to that much risk.

Scotty would be a cat person. He would also be the one putting together elaborate cat trees.
