"Torment of Destiny" Star Trek New Voyages

For your first few films, maybe. But at some point you learn how to finish what you start, or not start what you can't finish. Reach exceeding your grasp is only an excuse if you fail to learn how long your arms are. ;)
Best BB or Facebook message I've read this week.

To be fair the detractors of Cawley's group they have something of a history of abandoning projects, be it a few NV episodes and vingettes, Wild Wild West or Buck Rogers. I am sure that someone could make a good case for letting go of each of these, but it is a bit of a pattern.

That's a good point. a very good point.

...and from what clips of WWW and Buck Rogers were released, they both looked good and entertaining.

But is there no reason James couldn't ask CBS's permission (If he's so inclined and have thought of this) to release "Torment of Destiny" as promotional video for the tour, sets, and the film academy? Cutting down the existing footage to a 15 or 30 minute abridgment - falling within the guidelines and also be used as a promo. (Come to think of it, it could also be done to "Origins" and "Bread and Circuses") A Little narration to fill the gaps, etc. This makes everyone happy, more or less.

I understand New Voyages is dead but at the very least releasing Torment of Destiny as a final episode would be a good gesture and most likely not be pushing too far. It just seems like such a waste having several completed episodes lying around unseen.

You don't think releasing an unlicensed work that violates published guidelines wouldn't piss off the IP holder and jeopardize the portion of the IP (IE the Star Trek TOS set tour they now have licensed by CBS) said IP holder did license to you?

No, I don't. Productions like STC and NV that have had amazing relationships with CBS/P going back to things like Cawley assisting or getting cameos in official productions have never crossed any lines and STC is going just fine post guidelines. None of this stuff was produced afterward, either. I doubt they would bat an eye.

Cawley's lack of desire to release any of the now defunct Phase 2 stuff predates the guidelines by about a year if i'm not mistaken.

It's not as easy as just picking up where someone left off. I would love to see the unfinished episodes, but my life will go on just fine if I don't and I won't think any less of James if it doesn't happen. He went through a lot to make his dream a reality and unlike some in the fan film community, he's actually produced a pretty good body of work. I think he's earned the right at this point to decide what to do, or what not to do with the unfinished products. The only good reason to do a fan film at all is for the fun of it and if it's no longer fun, it's time to quit and I won't think poorly of anyone who says "enough already."

There's still the issue regarding the Kickstarter for "Torment of Destiny".

There's nothing stopping James from doing a version that fits into the existing guidelines - as I've suggested a 15 or 30 minute cut down of the planned version. An extended trailer type thing at minimum and a standard 2-parter/30 minutes at the maximum.

If there was no possible alternative format it could take then I could see people being ok with it not being completed/released, but there IS an alternative which fits into guidelines keeping CBS happy and a good companion to the film academy.

But if James doesn't want to do it, it's his call but the option is there. As long as he's keeping all the footage safe, that is the most important thing.

Personally it feels like the guidelines simply gave James the perfect excuse not to finish what he was no longer finding enjoyable.

And, as I've said before, I believe that James' new license as the Star Trek The Original Series Set Tour prohibits him from making/releasing fan films. So for him, the "just comply with the new Guidelines" workaround isn't really an option.
I thought another reason is that he was in Stsr Trek(2009)?

The guidelines are not laws, they're guidelines, not a binding contract. James having a cameo in 2009 is hardly an exclusionary factor, guidelines or not. The set tour may well be another factor since he has a licensing deal.

They've also granted him a license for the Star Trek Film Academy...so they are allowing him to oversee the creation of new material. James has said the end product of each "class" would be a 15 minute film [short].

Wonder if the plots could be reused for the film academy shorts...

AFAIR, all new scripts will be written.

Actually, if you read what they said, it's something more akin to the old 'Star Trek Experience' at Universal Studios' where guests/visitors will have a chance to shoot on the sets (with the crew there) - and they'll have a video to take with them of said experience.

It's not a going to be a Star Trek fan film production endeavor.
