Cornwell is an Admiral who feels like a real person instead of just some Idiot Admiral for the crew to ignore or some Corrupt Admiral to disobey. And she saw right through Lorca's bullshit by the end of the night in "Lethe". The only other Admiral who came close to this before was Ross on DS9. I'm not counting Kirk from the TOS Movies because he was always a Captain at heart, regardless of his rank.
I feel some people are probably thinking "Why the Hell did you put L'Rell in the list?" That's a good question. She's the only Klingon that's approachable. With the others, there's no getting through to them. And someone has to be gotten through to or these Klingons just don't stop. She was clever enough to get Voq out of the jam he was in at the end of "The Butcher's Knife", smart enough to take advantage of the offer made to her in "Will You Take My Hand?", and smart enough to listen to Georgiou's pragmatic advice on how to keep the Klingons in line at the end of "Point of Light". If this were Planet of the Apes, I'd say she's an Orangutan who managed to keep the Gorillas at bay. Chang, from TUC, is also an Orangutan if we're using Trek-to-Apes analogies. Gorkon and Azetbur would be like the Chimpanzees. Most of the Klingons in DSC are Gorillas through and through.
Pike and Prime Georgiou are examples of Model Captains. Pike is kind of like Kirk. Georgiou is kind of like Picard. Mirror Georgiou is the opposite. She's a model of her own society but also an emperor who now has to adapt to a society that's not imperial. Or, at the very least, the Federation is trying hard not to look like it's imperial. That's the grey area for Mirror Georgiou and Section 31 to operate in.
Lorca, of course, needs no explanation. He's still missed.
For those who didn't quite make the cut: Saru has grown on me. A lot. He's an honorable mention. So has Stamets. Culber needs to be more than Stamets' (dead) boyfriend. Tilly needs to be toned down back to Season 1 Level, otherwise she'd be in my Top 5.
With Tyler, the concept of two people in one sounds better than how it's executed. He feels like one person now. Kind of an average guy who just happens to know Klingon Culture.
