Tony Gilroy will direct THE BOURNE LEGACY

In fact, after all the hooplah about Renner, post-Hurt Locker, I've been wondering where he was going to surface.

He already surfaced in The Town, which scored him another Oscar nomination, this time for supporting actor. But he'll be even bigger once Mission Impossible IV: Ghost Protocol and The Avengers come out.

Oh cool! I just booted The Town up to the top of my Netflix queue (wasn't even aware Renner was in that one). And I'd forgotten he was cast as Hawkeye. The Avengers is going to be great!

Just read the news!!! Awesome. Renner is the only guy I can envision being able to step into the role without engendering grumpy comparisons in my mind to Matt Damon. Who knows, he might even be better.

Renner is too predictable of a choice especially after The Hurt Locker, The Town and will be even more cliche of a choice after Mission: Impossible IV and The Avengers.

Don't get me wrong- I think Renner is a very capable and strong actor. However, he's just a boring and uninventive choice for the role.

When Matt Damon was cast, he was a known actor but at that point he had done a lot of independent films like The Talented Mr. Ripley, Gerry, Rounders, etc. He didn't become a more known commodity until after Good Will Hunting, but even after a co-starring role in Ocean's Eleven, Damon wasn't your obvious choice for a big action star.

At that point in his career, his roles were defined by either strong dramatic work in independent films or some more well-known supporting work in higher-profile studio films. Renner, on the other hand, will be a known commodity to audiences as an action star by the time The Bourne Legacy opens in August 2012.

He'll have at least two big action blockbusters under his belt (the aforementioned Mission: Impossible IV and The Avengers) and thanks to his roles in The Hurt Locker and The Town he'll be known to audiences as playing emotionally disturbed characters.

At least with Matt Damon and The Bourne Identity, Damon's track record wasn't so cut and dry.

While I agree that he's an uninventive choice to headline the movie, I don't think anyone who doesn't have a clear sense of the story or familiarity with the script is qualified to comment on how well he fits the role. Both Renner and Damon have more tough-looking faces and presences than the standard Hollywood spook; indeed, one could say they look sorta similar, and it'll be interesting to see how and if the script comments on that.

Frankly all the final choices they had were uninspiring except maybe Tobey Maguire. That would have been bold. I don't think that Tobey has done a real action/thriller film. Would have been interesting to see him do one.

If Renner is being type-cast, that's his problem, not mine. My only concern for any role is that an actor be cast with the right looks and talent. Since I'm not Renner's agent, his career is not my business and I'm not necessarily even going to see the other movies he's doing nowadays, so that won't impact my impression of this movie.

^ I don't want them thinking that far outside the box ...

Edit - I've only just noticed that it seems to be the case that Gilroy wanted to cast actor Oscar Isaac in the lead but the studio over-ruled him and opted for Renner. Shame. Isaac is more obviously different from Damon (Renner is hardly a Damon lookalike but is in broadly similar mould). And Isaac isn't too well known - his casting would have had the same element of surprise that Damon brought to Identity. Ah well.

I dunno who that guy is, but to be slightly rude, he looks too Middle Eastern to be playing our all-American hero, Jason Bourne. :D

I'm not sure if you were serious with the last remark, but perhaps you're aware that this movie will NOT centre around Jason Bourne? It will be set in the same universe and continuity as the previous three but will be about a different character.

If it were a matter of a re-cast, then I'd concede that Renner would be a good sub for Damon but this is supposed to be about an entirely new character. I think an actor from an entirely different mould would have been appropriate. But it's just a matter of personal preference.

Weisz? Do you mean that actress who disappeared completely off the planet after her Oscar win? :rommie:

Funny since Rachel Weisz was also rumored to appear in the latest James Bond film (and was once linked to star in The Dark Knight Rises).

It's the Curse of the Best Supporting Actress Award (see Mercedes Ruehl, Mira Sorvino, Marisa Tomei, etc etc).

@Jackson Archer - yes, I also thought of the Bond/Batman rumours when I heard this news.

^ Given that Norton is much younger than Brian Cox, David Straithairn, Albert Finney etc, I wonder if he's going to be a rogue Treadstone operative. A sort of baddie Bourne.
