I'd say Avengers would count as a third likely franchise where he is playing Hawkeye. No question. But he's already got a spy franchise with MI:4; two would... be a little eek, no?
I would have preferred someone less known.

Do you at least recognize him?
He may be well known, but he doesn't have a huge resume of movies. He's a new face on the scene who will be largely defined by the roles he does from now on - he's known, but not in the sense of having a lot preconceptions and baggage attached to him. Damon had more baggage when he originally took on the role.I guess Renner was the most bankable choice in the eyes of the studio, but I would have preferred someone less known.
^ I don't want them thinking that far outside the box ...
Edit - I've only just noticed that it seems to be the case that Gilroy wanted to cast actor Oscar Isaac in the lead but the studio over-ruled him and opted for Renner. Shame. Isaac is more obviously different from Damon (Renner is hardly a Damon lookalike but is in broadly similar mould). And Isaac isn't too well known - his casting would have had the same element of surprise that Damon brought to Identity. Ah well.

Comparing the two movies, I think Renner's acting skills contributed hugely to The Hurt Locker's success (artistically; it wasn't a BO champ) whereas Butler just yelled and stomped around a lot, in a movie that was a big BO champ because of the visuals and general crazy comic bookishness of it. Butler's naked torso was more important to that movie than his thespian abilities. So it isn't surprising that Butler's limited acting range doesn't translate to, say, romantic comedy (who the frak ever thought it would???), whereas Renner's range definitely extends well beyond the action-hero mold. He probably could do romantic comedies, although I wouldn't wish that on him.I like Renner, but I wonder if studios are mistaking being in a successful movie for being the reason why a movie is successful. It's like what happened with Gerard Butler after 300.
