Just read the news!!! Awesome. Renner is the only guy I can envision being able to step into the role without engendering grumpy comparisons in my mind to Matt Damon. Who knows, he might even be better.
Renner is too predictable of a choice especially after
The Hurt Locker, The Town and will be even more cliche of a choice after
Mission: Impossible IV and
The Avengers.
Don't get me wrong- I think Renner is a very capable and strong actor. However, he's just a boring and uninventive choice for the role.
When Matt Damon was cast, he was a known actor but at that point he had done a lot of independent films like
The Talented Mr. Ripley, Gerry, Rounders, etc. He didn't become a more known commodity until after
Good Will Hunting, but even after a co-starring role in
Ocean's Eleven, Damon wasn't your obvious choice for a big action star.
At that point in his career, his roles were defined by either strong dramatic work in independent films or some more well-known supporting work in higher-profile studio films. Renner, on the other hand, will be a known commodity to audiences as an action star by the time
The Bourne Legacy opens in August 2012.
He'll have at least two big action blockbusters under his belt (the aforementioned
Mission: Impossible IV and
The Avengers) and thanks to his roles in
The Hurt Locker and
The Town he'll be known to audiences as playing emotionally disturbed characters.
At least with Matt Damon and
The Bourne Identity, Damon's track record wasn't so cut and dry.
