Tony Gilroy will direct THE BOURNE LEGACY

Nah, Jake's too drippy. I liked him best by far in Zodiac, where he played... a drip. Hedlund would be fine.

No question. But he's already got a spy franchise with MI:4; two would... be a little eek, no?

Well, he's not getting any younger. Now's a chance for Renner to take his recent career rise all the way to the bank.

I've no real problem with Renner but he played a traumatised veteran character in The Hurt Locker and will be a spy in the next MI movie. It doesn't strike me as particularly inspired casting to put him in a Bourne movie. I'd have preferred them to come up with the sort of actor you don't expect to see in a movie like this.

^ I don't want them thinking that far outside the box ...

Edit - I've only just noticed that it seems to be the case that Gilroy wanted to cast actor Oscar Isaac in the lead but the studio over-ruled him and opted for Renner. Shame. Isaac is more obviously different from Damon (Renner is hardly a Damon lookalike but is in broadly similar mould). And Isaac isn't too well known - his casting would have had the same element of surprise that Damon brought to Identity. Ah well.

Right, forgot about that. That's a full dance card to be bringing to another franchise.

I'm more and more open to the idea. Like I said before, he's a solid actor, but he's definitely not the most inspired choice. Matt Damon wasn't really an action star before The Bourne Identity.

By the time The Bourne Legacy comes out (August 2012), audiences will be familiar with Renner as an action star (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol comes out this December; The Avengers comes out next summer).

I guess Renner was the most bankable choice in the eyes of the studio, but I would have preferred someone less known.

I like Renner, but I wonder if studios are mistaking being in a successful movie for being the reason why a movie is successful. It's like what happened with Gerard Butler after 300. Jeff Goldbum didn't become the No. 1 movie star in the world after Jurassic Park and Independence Day.

Do you at least recognize him?

Just read the news!!! Awesome. Renner is the only guy I can envision being able to step into the role without engendering grumpy comparisons in my mind to Matt Damon. Who knows, he might even be better.

In fact, after all the hooplah about Renner, post-Hurt Locker, I've been wondering where he was going to surface.

He may be well known, but he doesn't have a huge resume of movies. He's a new face on the scene who will be largely defined by the roles he does from now on - he's known, but not in the sense of having a lot preconceptions and baggage attached to him. Damon had more baggage when he originally took on the role.

I dunno who that guy is, but to be slightly rude, he looks too Middle Eastern to be playing our all-American hero, Jason Bourne. :D

Damon wasn't a "surprise" when cast in the role - he was very well known, and had action-hero looks. Didn't surprise me, anyway.

Oh and btw, "blonde" refers only to females. For males, the proper term is "blond." That's a weird mistake for them to make.

Comparing the two movies, I think Renner's acting skills contributed hugely to The Hurt Locker's success (artistically; it wasn't a BO champ) whereas Butler just yelled and stomped around a lot, in a movie that was a big BO champ because of the visuals and general crazy comic bookishness of it. Butler's naked torso was more important to that movie than his thespian abilities. So it isn't surprising that Butler's limited acting range doesn't translate to, say, romantic comedy (who the frak ever thought it would???), whereas Renner's range definitely extends well beyond the action-hero mold. He probably could do romantic comedies, although I wouldn't wish that on him.

I like the choice but would have ultimately preferred that the studio not make any more Borune movies. That being said I might check this out next year.
