News TOMY Star Trek Diecast Ship Replicas

The large TOMY die-cast model is out of my price range and always will be. Frankly, even if I had that amount of change lying around, I could find much more practical ways to spend it.

It’s a luxury item though, with all the bells and whistles. Of course it costs a packet.

It is what it is and it’s the topic of this thread. Corgi’s (lovely) little Enterprise has its own thread I believe?

Compared to the hundreds the Tomy model costs the Corgi ones are a good deal for me.
That's the biggest shame of the stuff from TOMY and Factory Entertainment these days. They look great and accurate, but I'm never gonna pay northwards of $800 for a glorified toy. Art Asylum/DST and Playmates had fidelity to the source material and a price point that wouldn't break the bank.

These models are almost 100% die-cast metal, studio quality paint detailing, accurate fiber-optic and LED lighting... I could go on and on explaining the shear amount of detail these models have in them. The Bussard collectors on the TOS-E are the most genuine in looks to what was seen on television than in most commissioned models I've ever seen! All of this and they are LESS than $700 USD?!! I've never seen as detailed a model as these for less than several thousands of dollars. The Art Asylum/DST and Playmates toys are "glorified toys"... these TOMY models I argue are works of art! :p

You're missing my point. Hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for a single item is a shitload of money to ask of anyone. Plus, if memory serves, there were a lot of issues that crept up when TOMY made the TOS Enterprise which makes the whole "work of art" statement a bit dubious to me.

@Firebird I have the TOMY TOS-E and yes, there were a few issues (screw caps and stand) that were discussed before most had it in hand. I was one of those worried but after receiving the model both "issues" were less than made out to be. I understand it is a lot of money but my point is that the overall quality is well worth the cost. Other models similar to the detail of the TOMY model cost much, much more and those are mostly made of plastic! So for me cost v. quality wins out as I never thought I could own a large, detailed model of the Enterprise at this price point.

I just saw the video of the Corgi Refit in the other thread and that is tiny (8in. x 3in.) compared to the TOMY model (it's 3 feet!) and the Corgi is at least $60 USD with no lights?! That doesn't compute with my cost v. quality analysis.

People spend according to their ability, wants and needs. The asking price of $699 USD isn't an issue for me as having this "work of art" to enjoy is worth it to me. People with way more money than I have spend way more money on their wants and needs and more power to them. I'm happy, their happy. Apparently there are 4,200+ people who feel the same as me regarding the TOMY Refit.

I also was thinking I could (and you could) buy two to sell one a bit later on ebay. Looking at the after market of the TOS-E over 18 have sold just in the month of August for an average price of $1,800 USD ! Doing this you actually can have this model for free!! ;)

Again, each to their own and their own limits or desires. I just felt that the comparison of these TOMY models to Art Asylum/DST or Corgi models is a bit of a stretch to say the least.

To me, this is not a toy, it is not exactly art, but it is a collectible. I have seen diecast refit models (Eaglemoss, Corgi), I have seen light up refit models (Bandai, Diamond Select), but in each case, there are either stuff missing, not included or simply cannot fit in. This is the only effort I know that actually tries to incorporate most, if not all the lighting and tries to be accurate in proportions, color and (some) effects. Oh and it is not $1,500 or $10,000 like the others that I have found (I’m looking at you, Factory Entertainment). Those are truly out of any normal people’s price range. This price of $699 is not that extravagant for collectors. If you collect 1/6 or 1/4 scale figures, a premium figure is just at or slightly below this price. If you collect limited edition art prints, this is not too far fetched either. The same could be said for collectors of exotic supercar models. Collectors spend thousands in collectibles each year (not me), so this is just another collectible within seas of collectibles.

So what? That has no relevance at all to the topic at hand?

Unless we are just going to drag any die-cast collectibles into this discussion now?

I’m in, even though I don’t really have any place to display this thing, but the flesh is weak.

4,395 backers! 10 days left! I think this will end with 4,500+ backers! That’s 2,000 backers more that the TOS Enterprise!! Wow!

I would have thought the TOS would have been slightly more popular. My pet theories: 1) last time people thought TOMY was going to take the money and run, because they didn’t know it was a real company and not some fly-by-night operation, now there’s more trust; 2) there have been several refinished 1:350 TOS models over the years, but this is the first refit at a reasonable price-point; and 3) more people buying them for resale since the TOS sells for like 3x its original price point.

Yeah, it's a proven success, they have shown they can deliver and the refit also looks like a much more polished product than the TOS. I can see people buying multiples of this one as an investment.
