I'm surprised that we haven't had more shocks of horror at the idea that Federation Star Ships seem to land on earth on a regular basis. Maybe the Kelvin is just under construction too but that doesn't seem to fit what we know...
Not hard really, simple interest may prevail she might have a larger interest in the more obscure Romulan rather then the Klingon language. Maybe she had trouble with it - any of a number of reasons, not all translators know all languages. And the question remains: Why does she speak THREE dialacts of Romulan and not a single Klingon dialect when they were running into the Klingons all the time?
Everything else about this film seems to indicate that we're in an altered timeline, as the result of Nero's initial incursion from the future into the 2240s.
SO can we expect a tv series out of this new movie?
I'll get right on that. Hang on...Opps - I see there is an existing thread - anyone want to merge?
I was trying not to be a hypocrite by being polite through understatement.
800 seems an awful lot for them all to come from the Kelvin, unless they were filled from evacuating a colony or something. Maybe Nero's ship damaged the Kelvin's controls and sent it headed towards a city on a planet. George Kirk stays on board while everyone evacuates and activates the self-destruct sequence. Maybe it's something like that.My guess is that Kirk's father is the first officer of the Kelvin, her captain gets killed in the attack by Nero (wish they had chosen a less cheesy name) and then Kirks father takes over and buys enough time for the other mentioned 800 people to escape somehow (possibly including baby Kirk and his mother).
It's also being mentioned that Uhura is able to speak three dialects of Romulan. How come? Back then, practically nothing was known about the Romulans, not even what they look like.
And if she is such a talent, how come she doesn't speak a single word of Klingon? Klingon would be the more obvious language to learn for a communications officer with such great linguistic skills.

Um, there was a whole war with the Romulans and we never saw their faces (apparently.)
I'm guessing a few codes were cracked and languages learned.
How was a cease-fire and treaty agreements worked out otherwise?

I'm pretty sure Robau is the captain of the ship George Kirk serves on. Whether that is the Kelvin or not is sure an interesting question.
www.iesb.net has got a review of the footage up - these folks seem to be trying to outdo each other in praising this stuff:

One hell of a report. Has there been a negative thing written yet by the media outlets? I haven't seen any so far.

If you just cared about name recognition you'd be making a TNG movie.
