Today's Reports On Trek Footage From New York

Me, I'd love to see a Robau-era TV series. (Ain't gonna happen; am just saying.) Not that this is a good reason, but I'm lukewarm on the new 1701, but really like the Kelvin--and it'd be nice to see more of that kind of neo-TOS ship architecture onscreen.

I'm surprised that we haven't had more shocks of horror at the idea that Federation Star Ships seem to land on earth on a regular basis. Maybe the Kelvin is just under construction too but that doesn't seem to fit what we know...

I honestly think that is an error in the article, and that the Kelvin was destroyed. That, and the so called landing bay for the Federation starships, is actually the construction yard where probably more then one ship are in various stages of construction.

How cool would it be to see the Enterprise and another, perhaps even less finished Constitution class ship being built side by side, like the famous photo of the Olympic and the Titanic.

The UGO reporter seemed a little obnoxious. The reporter booed JJ and then called him rude for being honest, rehearsed or not. JJ's point was that he grew to like Star Trek. After the presentation JJ was heckled again by this reporter by declaring a piece of fanon as fact.

Also, no part of Kirk's behavior before we knew him could be a canon violation since we don't really know what he was like before Star Trek.

Also, just because Pike served on the Kelvin doesn't mean he was her captain. He could have been first officer, or security, or something else. I'm pretty sure Robau is still captain of the Kelvin. And given the number of errors in these articles, I still believe those shipyards are either part of San Francisco's shipyards or some kind of station at which the final touches are made after the bulk of the work is done in San Francisco.

Re: Additional spoilers from New York footage - SPOILERS!

Its possible during the Earth-Romulan war they ran across three dialects being used in communications - seems reasonable to me.

And the question remains: Why does she speak THREE dialacts of Romulan and not a single Klingon dialect when they were running into the Klingons all the time?
Not hard really, simple interest may prevail she might have a larger interest in the more obscure Romulan rather then the Klingon language. Maybe she had trouble with it - any of a number of reasons, not all translators know all languages.

Re: Additional spoilers from New York footage - SPOILERS!

Everything else about this film seems to indicate that we're in an altered timeline, as the result of Nero's initial incursion from the future into the 2240s.

That's just guessing on the fans' part. There is no alternate timeline.

Judging by the numerous errors in those reports, I'm not going to give credence to details like Pike being the captain of the Kelvin.

My guess is that Kirk's father is the first officer of the Kelvin, her captain gets killed in the attack by Nero (wish they had chosen a less cheesy name) and then Kirks father takes over and buys enough time for the other mentioned 800 people to escape somehow (possibly including baby Kirk and his mother).

WORF
'A Little'?

I was trying not to be a hypocrite by being polite through understatement.

I respect that politeness. :) (I just wanted to slip in one of my favorite Worf moments. )

But the absence of politeness in the UGO reporter, the insults lobbed at JJ -- his disrespectful tone was not only completely uncalled for, it completely deflated his integrity in my eyes.

Petty, that writer.

800 seems an awful lot for them all to come from the Kelvin, unless they were filled from evacuating a colony or something. Maybe Nero's ship damaged the Kelvin's controls and sent it headed towards a city on a planet. George Kirk stays on board while everyone evacuates and activates the self-destruct sequence. Maybe it's something like that.

Re: Additional spoilers from New York footage - SPOILERS!

It's also being mentioned that Uhura is able to speak three dialects of Romulan. How come? Back then, practically nothing was known about the Romulans, not even what they look like.

And if she is such a talent, how come she doesn't speak a single word of Klingon? Klingon would be the more obvious language to learn for a communications officer with such great linguistic skills.

Well, it's possible her specialty was romulan language, not klingon...

I mean, just because a person is fluent in french doesn't mean they can speak Chinese...

Um, there was a whole war with the Romulans and we never saw their faces (apparently.)

I'm guessing a few codes were cracked and languages learned.

How was a cease-fire and treaty agreements worked out otherwise?

Well, in the FJ Tech Manual it was noted that the romulan peace treaty, and the establishment of the neutral zone was conducted over subspace radio... That would suggest that there was communication between federation/united Earth forces and Romulian forces...

I thought I heard something about the Kelvin being part of a convoy, like a WWII escort ship. But I'm not sure. Anyway, if they are escorting civillian ships, that might explain it. A ship of the KELVIN's apparent size would only have a crew of around 50-100, traditionally.

I'm pretty sure Robau is the captain of the ship George Kirk serves on. Whether that is the Kelvin or not is sure an interesting question.

www.iesb.net has got a review of the footage up - these folks seem to be trying to outdo each other in praising this stuff:

After reading that review, I can't wait for the scene when the Enterprise comes out of warp into Vulcan space, and wreckage of the rest of the Star Fleet Battlegroup is dispersed throughout the area.

One hell of a report. Has there been a negative thing written yet by the media outlets? I haven't seen any so far.

There's been nothing but praise written so far by anyone who we know to have seen any of the film beyond the trailer, and that includes at least one trekkie reviewer who was annoyed by the canon violations but really impressed with the film anyway.

The movie is being actively put down by:

1) Anonymous folks who have axes to grind with the writers or producers (you find these guys mainly in talkback at www.aintitcool.com);
2) About ten percent of the trek fans who have seen the trailer; and
3) People for whom the quality of the movie is less important than what they believe it means for the Franchise they know.

Depends on how big the Kelvin is, for example the current Royal Navy Invincible-class carriers which are little over 200 meters in length have a ships crew that consists of 650, then there's 350 air crew and additional space for up to 500 royal marines.
