Today's Reports On Trek Footage From New York

cotthm;2307243] If you just cared about name recognition you'd be making a TNG movie.
Hmmm... I don't think TNG has as much cultural oompf as Kirk & Spock. Could be wrong, but think when people hear Star Trek Spock very likely comes to mind first and foremost.

Not to anyone born after 1970.

Oh don't agree, Kirk and crew have attained a certain iconic, if not mythic status that I think most people reconize on some level no matter their birth date - I mean I was born in 1975 and to me Star Trek was always about Kirk and Spock TNG just sort of tagged onto all that.

When a lot people think of Star Trek these days, they think of "the guy with the thing on his face."

aka Geordi.

I must really be out of touch.
Of course my friends and I were watching Trek repeats as kids before all this "Next Gen" stuff cam along - and usually when people I know who aren't Trek fans bring it up, they mention "Dr. Spock" or confuse it with Star Wars...

Huh? I was born in 1976 and Star Trek:TOS was the first trek I saw, as was it anyone else for anyone else my age watching TV (in the UK) as a children.

Also I bet if I went into the street and give people a picture of Kirk/Picard and then Spock/Data - more people could name Kirk/Spock that Picard/Data.

That's a frankly bizarre statement, I don't think Geordi has *any* cultural traction.
I'm only speaking from years of experience with people in my age group: people who were born in the mid-80s, right around the time TNG came out.

And Geordi might not be significant, but he's recognizable to my generation as Geordi, as well as the guy from Reading Rainbow.

I was born in 1983... I first saw star trek in 1985, it was reruns of TOS. I didn't see the movies until late '86.

I watched TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT from day one, I saw every film in the theaters since Trek V.

And I am far more a fan of TOS and the Kirk era films... Go figure.

Also, just because Pike served on the Kelvin doesn't mean he was her captain. He could have been first officer, or security, or something else. I'm pretty sure Robau is still captain of the Kelvin.[/ quote]

Considering that the screenwriters cosidered some aspects of the novels canon it's entirely possible that Pike was the first officer of the Kelvin and Rabau the captain. In the novels George Kirk was a lifelong security man who had no real interest in command. The only time George served as a first officer was when Captain April tricked him into serving as the first officer on the Enterprise's maiden voyage. Considering that this movie is establishing Pike as the first captain I'm guessing George's adventures with April won't be a part of this continuity but perhaps they'll make him the security chief of the Kelvin. Perhaps Rabau is killed and Pike is incapacitated and George is forced to take command. That's my guess.

I agree with that. People I know who are under 30 know nothing about Star Trek beyond vague TNG imagery such as Geordi or Worf. It's been a long time since Kirk and Spock have been on the fore-front of pop culture. We've basically had TNG over-saturated on tv for the last 20 years, you know.

JJ's point was that he grew to like Star Trek.
It sounded to me like he grew to like his vision of Star Trek, not necessarily Roddenberry's vision. The fact that he seems to need to keep reminding people that he's not a Star Trek fan indicates that we shouldn't expect much 'Star Trek' in this movie.

It's all that watching TV when you were 2 years old. :)

I dunno. Nick Meyer had a pretty condescending view towards Star Trek and he made TWOK which is commonly considered the best of the Classic Trek movies. I see no reason why Jar Jar Abrams condescension is less palatable than Meyer's.

My observations have been that people under 30 are much more likely to be interested in Picard and Data than Kirk and Spock (if they even care about Star Trek at all.)

That's a good guess. Sounds plausible.

I can't buy that, since everything in the trailer is recognizably "Star Trek." :techman:
The first 40 seconds of the trailer had nothing that was recognizably 'Star Trek', nor was the motorcycle driving through the cornfields, the scene in the shuttle hanger, Spock's violence on the bridge, or a young man hiding under Uhura's bed while she's undressing reminiscent of anything 'Star Trek' I've ever seen before.
