TNT cancels Leverage

I'm hoping Geoff Thorne drops in to give us his take. He's a regular poster on TrekBBS and a writer on the show.

I missed this show probably more than I watched it, but I always enjoyed it when I did see it. I think I'll go back and watch it all from the start.

Sort of a Mission: Impossible for the 21st century.

Yes, very much so. For all that Mission: Impossible (the series) was presented as a spy show, it was really a heist show at heart, about a team of grifters pulling scams or committing intricate thefts week after week. It's just that the networks wouldn't have tolerated a show whose protagonists were criminals, so they had to make them off-book intelligence agents pulling scams on foreign spies and terrorists and mobsters with the unofficial support of the US government.

Other than that, the main difference was that most of M:I (except for the first half of the first season, the entire fifth season, and the '88 revival) was essentially devoid of any real characterization of its core cast. The producers wanted them to be ciphers who were defined entirely by the roles they played.
True enough. Luckily, they used some really fine character actors for the most part.

Heck, I picked up a new Kolchak:The Night Stalker novel at Barnes & Noble earlier this week--with Darren McGavin on the cover!
Not a graphic novel? What was the title?

The only silver lining is that what is now the series finale was written as such just incase it wasn't renewed.

So bummed Leverage is ending. The last couple of years have had some boring lows and some off the charts awesome highs.

I really liked them all, and the moments of interplay that sounded improvised.

Elliot: "Dammt, Hardison!"
Hardison: "Why don't you hit someone?!"
Elliot: "Oh, I'm gonna hit someone!"

Don't forget. The series finale is on tonight, Christmas or no Christmas.

Sorry, Scrooge, Kris Kringle, Grinch, and George Bailey, I'm watching LEVERAGE tonight.

I'm watching Doctor Who and recording K9 right now, but TNT is showing the Leverage finale several times and I'll be recording it overnight.

Remind me, was the black book part of continuity or did Devlin just make it up last week?

Just watched the finale. One of their cleverest eps, a great call back to the very first ep, and a great note to go out on.

That was a pretty terrific finale. I could nitpick a couple of things (like the inconsistency over whether Parker should've been on the surveillance video of the van escape), but it was a very clever set of twists and misdirects.

It was also a terrific series finale, and actually makes me kind of glad the show wasn't renewed, because it would be a shame to have to undo this resolution and reset everything to the previous status quo. It would be interesting to follow up on the new one in some form, though.
