Probation

As part of Ensign Ro's reinstatement into Starfleet on a permanent basis, and her new assignment to the Enterprise at Picard's recommendation, she is temporarily expected to attend routine counseling sessions, which she is none to happy about, as this was also common practice, in a more punitive mandatory way, while she was incarcerated. The sessions don't go very well, because in this case, they are being conducted by Counselor Troi's newest junior officer trainee, who despite being exceptionally intelligent, and highly adept at diplomacy and ambassadorial functions, among other duties counselors are expected to provide, his ability as a simple therapist, due to his unique alien cultural traits, leaves much to be desired, causing friction with both Ro & his superior, Deanna.

With nearly all her crew at risk, Nella wants to be allowed to join the team that will attempt their rescue, but Picard refuses on the grounds that as her ship's captain, her duty is to remain aboard her ship. His lessons in command & their feelings for one another find themselves at odds.

"Apparitions"

The Enterprise crew is mourning the loss of highly well-liked Arboretum caretaker who had just passed away at 150, just as they pass through an uncharted nebulous expanse near Breen space. Unbeknownst to the crew, the nebulous anomaly is home to a non-corporeal alien who decides to study the crew and decides to present itself as whoever person is thinking of. As the fates would have it, the crew has been thinking about someone they had lost. Picard thought about his mother. Riker thought about his mother. Beverly thought about her parents. Worf thought about that kid on Gault. And of course, nothing kept the alien from scanning Data's mind and we can all guess who he was thinking about.

However, Geordi is able to recognize the alien thanks to the visor, and the alien finds him a challenge.....

During an conference, Geordi befriends an elderly alien, who appears to be a Talaxian but never divulges the name of his species to Geordi. The elderly Talaxian spends much of the time talking about his travels learning how to macgyver different alien technology. Geordi feels bad about him as he speaks of his home, so far away.

Worf becomes close to the young woman when his security team is processing the people that she was trying to help escape.

By All That Is Holy- A first contact mission with a particularly religious species leaves Data with a desire to explore spirituality. Picard who has been avoiding Data is forced to talk to him about his own faith or lack there of. Telling Data that lacking that spiritual belief does not make him less human.
Next Episode: Earthbound

"Earthbound"
(NOTE: This one will probably work best as a two parter!)
The Enterprise is recalled to Earth after Starfleet Command issues a fleet wide red alert and distress signal. Upon arriving at Earth Orbit, the Enterprise hails Starfleet but receives no response. Upon further examination, there IS no Starfleet: all orbiting ships and stations are gone, all subspace frequencies have gone silent, and most of the population of the planet is missing, save for a few scattered pockets of human life on the heavily irradiated surface. Upon careful examination, Data confirms that the Enterprise has somehow shifted into an alternate reality, based on changes to the timeline. The crew prepares for time warp, and after slingshotting around the sun, end up in the year 1994, where they encounter the source of the temporal divergence: an alien ship of unknown origin is in orbit, readying weapons to fire on the Earth's surface. When the Enterprise puts itself between the Earth and the invading ship, the weapons fire catastrophically damages the Enterprise stardrive section, forcing the ship to separate as the stardrive explodes. The resulting explosion destroys the intruder but sends the Enterprise saucer section into the atmosphere, where Data is able to soft land the ship in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of California. Realizing they are probably stranded, Captain Picard orders Commander Riker, Counselor Troi, Doctor Crusher and Lt. Commander LaForge to form an away team disguised as surfers, who will attempt to feel out the environment of 1994 Earth. Upon reaching the shore, and after a few misadventures in 1994 California, the away team encounters a mysterious old man who informs them of a way to restore their timeline: there is a hidden artifact on Earth, one of the apparently many Guardians of Forever, constructed many thousands of years ago by an unknown race and placed around the galaxy. This will allow the crew to prevent their past selves from making the same mistake that led to the destruction of the Enterprise. The old man identifies himself as Gary Seven, and reveals this is his final mission, and that the invading ship wanted Gary for a perceived crime he had committed against them. Sacrificing his freedom for the future of humanity, Gary goes through the Guardian of Forever back to before the Enterprise arrived in the past, turns himself over to the aliens, and Picard and crew suddenly find themselves back aboard a completely intact Enterprise in the 24th century, with no evidence of what had transpired save for their memories of the encounter.

NEXT EPISODE: "Where Blind Men See"

"Where Blind Men See" - Enterprise-D re-supplies the Keller outpost, an experimental Betazoid colony where disabled members of species are taught to develop their other senses by the empaths. Unfortunately, one of the scientists there has been forming a mental connection with her students, turning them into a closed group that rely on each other to form one whole mental body - a non-Borg collective cult, such that they are unhealthily dependent on her for their well-being. Geordi befriends a woman who is trying to convince her sister to leave the group and come home, but she is killed and Geordi is framed for the murder.

Meanwhile, Beverly tries to keep one of the battle's veterans alive long enough to see the commemoration.

Next episode: "Intrusion"

Intrusion

Unusual energy readings reveal parasitic creatures in the dilithium chamber, feeding on the dilithium. Geordi's staff, along with Data, are tasked with extracting them, without harm if possible.

In a B plot, Wesley Crusher advises Robin Lefler, over a private communication from the academy, on how to better work with Reg Barclay on this latest task, as she's never cared for him personally.

Later, while Laforge consults his team in 10-Forward, Troi can sense Lefler's distaste for Barclay, while sitting with Guinan, & despite Guinan's warning, offends Lefler by privately addressing her about it.

Lefler expresses that it's really no one's business how she privately feels toward coworkers, as long as it's not reflected in her ability to work with them. Troi is forced to lay off, when Geordi later agrees that his team is fine. In the end, Lefler & Barclay actually have a small bonding moment over both feeling intruded upon by their mutual ship's counselor.

Next Episode: A Stellar Disappointment

"A Stellar Disappointment" - Enterprise-D visits a stellar nursery that was the last known location of the Emmaline, the personal ship of Professor Samuel Quire, who left a storied academic career to explore the stars by himself, against the better judgment of his family. His granddaughter, Cassandra Quire-Foley, hopes to locate him and take him home. The ship is found, undamaged, but powered down, and uninhabited, no sign of where he went, no suitable planets and one escape pod missing. Oddly, though, she claims to be able to hear his voice calling her, all over the Enterprise, and she and Deanna take a shuttle out to explore the parts of the nursery where the Enterprise can't go. It is there that both are overwhelmed by the professor's voice, echoing throughout the nursery, and become lost. When their shuttle is about the be sucked into a star, they are saved by a mysterious tractor beam pulling them out. A non-corporeal life form tells them then that the professor spoke to the stars as friends, and the life forms there wanted him to join them, and he agreed, becoming one of them - scattered here, there, and everywhere. But he can't stay because he's dying, so some of them sacrificed themselves to give him back his human form and save his life. They take him home, and he admits that he thought it would be wonderful there, but he became so homesick and now he's glad to be back with those he loves.
