TNG DVDs being "discontinued by the manufacturer"

While I understand that most people prefer the BD versions, I think the DVDs should be kept in print because it's the only place to find the original and unaltered episodes.

Aside from correcting a few minor FX errors aren't the BR the original unaltered episodes?

After all they've gone back to the original film to create them.

They've recreated the originals as closely as possible, but everything has been recomposited and there are numerous elements, such as phaser shots and so forth, that have had to be recreated because they were never originally created on film. But they are pretty darn close.

However, I'm getting a bit tired of reading in this thread -- and not from you, I'm just taking this opportunity to comment -- about how "there's no reason for anyone to want" and "everyone should" and "no one should" and so forth. Folks, let me tell you... there are lots of diverse preferences out there. Just because someone prefers something different from you doesn't make that preference invalid.

I could understand people wanting to have TNG on DVD if if was at least the quality of TOS on DVD. But the TNG discs are just a train-wreck of poor picture quality and severely muted colors.

Not to mention being a decade old. If you've not bought TNG on DVD by now, you're not ever going to buy it. If you want them after now keep an eye out in your local second-hand DVD sales/vintage store. They'll start showing up before long.

At this point, the people who really cared that much to have the original, unaltered, SD versions should have already gotten it. You can't expect a company to continue to cater to an ever shrinking minority.

I still want to see these episodes in shitty grainy VHS just like I used to watch them in my bedroom without cable and a crappy TV antenna! Cater to me! Bring back TNG on VHS!

^ In this case, who WANTS to?

I do ... ;)

Apart from the first two seasons, TNG doesn't look as bas as people are trying to make everyone believe. I'm currently rewatching DS9 on DVD, and (maybe due to upconverting tech in my BD player) it looks great! I'd take that over a recreated Odo anytime! But that's just me, I know I'm probably the only one here who doesn't want his Trek to be tampered with.

I beg to differ. The cost and you know, life stuff that seems more important at the time has prevented me from buying these things as fast as I'd like. But I'm still buying htem.

Still, the DVDs are a decade old for a 25-year-old TV series. You'd be hard pressed to find ANY DVD for such an old TV series or even a movie aside from classics or main-stream enough movies to warrant such attention.

The DVDs are being disco'd. Deal. It's no surprise to me at all because, again, they're OLD and there's a new and better version coming out. The manufacturer isn't going to keep spending money to keep Luddites happy.

While I wouldn't use such harsh language, this is essentially correct. Why should CBS keep pressing discs for an inferior version of a series?

Should they keep pressing Laser Discs to keep a few people happy too?

Should they keep pressing Laser Discs to keep a few people happy too?

I don't care about the medium, I care about the content. And I happen to like the original and unaltered episodes more than those with recreated fx. Even though they are visually inferior!

The content still exists on VHS, Laser Disc, DVD and streaming. It may be harder for you to acquire it, but it exists all the same.

Then search the web for some VHS or DVDs. No one is removing old media from the market, just keeping more old media from appearing on the market.

Technology changes.

The effects are being minimally recreated. The increase of resolution by about 400% should be enough to overcome the minimal changes in the effects.

I mostly started this topic so fans would stock up if they haven't already on TNG seasons since the dvds are likely going out of print. Already have seasons 2-7 of TNG, all the seasons I needed.

Not sure if this is eventually going to happen with DS9 and VOY, especially if they never do a remaster for those shows.
