TNG DVDs being "discontinued by the manufacturer"

I am one of the few who is perfectly fine with 720p and don't really care about 1080p ;)

I think the jump to 720p is far more impressive than the jump to 1080p since we hit the point of diminishing returns. But other people will disagree with me. It's all good.

But keeping the DVDs, at this point, would be like still making the VHS versions. It's a dead technology that has largely been replaced. No one is demanding they make VHS, Laserdic or even Beta copies anymore. So why keep making DVD?

If DVD manufacturers were too discontinue DVD players then you wold see people buying more Blu-Ray.

That will probably happen soon.

VCRs are already a dead technology; standard definition DVD players soon will follow.

Eventually, we will all go to streaming but I can't see that taking off big time for another 10 years or so. Blurays are still a niche market, DVD's are still pretty much everywhere. I have TOS remastered on DVD (I didn't have a bluray at the time) and it looks fine to me.

A DVD version of TNG remastered will appear not too far down the line - they may wait until all the blurays are out first (2014?) but it will happen.

;)
That would be awful for me. I love having a hard copy of everything records, films, nintendo whatever. None of this streaming shit. No e book crap. I want a physical cassette or cd of some kind that is mine.

I agree. Having physical media is a much better option than streaming or even a file dl on your pc. Sure, over time that media can go bad, but the technology has gotten better and if you store them properly it will last for quite some time.

Streaming has one problem the speed of your broadband connection. Rural areas can be less well served than urban areas when it comes to upgrading the newtowrk to support faster speeds. As a consequence a digital divide can/is occuring between those with slow and superfast connections.

Most rural exhcanges which don't have access to alternte means such as cable and have to use the telephone system are still on ADSL which can support speeds of upto 8. Whilst most non-rural exhanges have been upgraded to support ADSL+ for speeds of upto 20.

In my area I know that a lot of rural folks are still on dial-up Internet (there is one area that was upgraded but that was only after the residents banded together).

The fans who bought the blu rays, what are you doing with your DVDs?

After seeing them in HD, you can't go back to the DVDs.

The packaging? :barf: I threw it away the moment I got the original DVDs home. Why would anyone want to keep it? Those awful fold-fold-fold things...

I honestly like the look of the packaging far more than the packaging the other series got. Sure, it's a bit cumbersome and awkward but I like the look of it. I wish the BDs had more interesting packaging that wasn't so small and with the discs covering up internal artwork (including the episode guide.) Hell, I've half-considered putting the BDs in the DVD boxes because I find them that much more interesting.

This is the TV series of youth, a great, powerful, series. It deserves more than a small case not much bigger than a regular BD movie case.

The TNG DVD packaging does look nice, if it is a bit cumbersome. However, those big cardboard boxes take up an awful lot of space. The blu-ray packaging, while not the most interesting, is slim and is a huge space saver! I, for one, am grateful for that.

As for what to do with the DVDs now that the series is being re-done in HD? I may just give them to a friend of mine who doesn't own the series but would probably take them. I suppose I could try to sell them but I don't feel like going through the hassle.

The packaging for DS9 and VOY really sucked. Cheap plastic trays held together by tape on the side that will easily fall apart after a few uses.

It was obvious that Paramount only cared enough about TNG and TOS to give them decent packaging.

The plastic sleeve/case for DS9 is just terrible, the Voyager ones are even worse with the two pieces that sort of vaguely overlap in the middle.

Things to out of print. Books, CDs, DVDs. It's not because of some kind of malicious intent on the part of the producers, it's just the way things are and have always been. In a few years, the same thing will happen with the Blu-ray editions. Let's not all go insane over the natural course of events.
I don't accept this, I will continue to press CBS for a release of TNG-R on Betamax. :techman:

Don't forget HD-DVD and Laserdisk while you're at it.

LOL, Mott, you say that in jest - but I did drop the cash for the HD DVD season one TOS set and owned all of that series on LaserDisc! I am literally Paramount/CBS/Whoever's dream fan - some would say mug! Will it never end?!!!

Not to mention that Paramount decided too put the episode titles for Voyager right around the center hole of he dic, so hat if you re trying to read what episodes are on the disc, you have to keep turning the disc. When I first opened Season 1 I thought Paramount had put the episodes on DVD-18's with one side as the episodes and then the other side as bonus features. Even Enterprise received better disc rt with he sweeping blue lines.

But the DS9 cases started splitting on me as soon as I took the shrink wrap off them. Even back in he early 2000's I could see that paramount's quality control for Seaon sets went way down. Paramount kind of set the bar for TV shows on DVD, but then under performed for the remaining Trek releases (except the Animated Series, but CBS was handling that release).

I hear this all the time. But I've had those sets for years and never had an issue with the cases splitting.

The TOS cases were pretty nice but I find those a touch more annoying and bulky than the TNG ones. The TOS-RM cases are nice, though.

Broadband internet access in the United States is now at 94% and the UK is over 95%.

Well, you'd believe it if you saw my cases with scotch tape on them holding the different parts together (and the tape has even worn off my Season 5, so the part that folds over the non-spine side if the disc holders just slides right off as soon as I pull it out of he case).
