Time To Come Out...

A post in the TNG board got me thinking.

Everyone has things they like/dislike about Star Trek, not all of them will be the same but there are some elements that seem to be beloved/despised by the vast majority, so going against these trends makes you something of a misfit in the Trek fandom. But I thought I'd throw this out as a place for people to actually give voice to the elements they like/dislike that go against the 'norm'.

It's a safe place, so no petty bickering or squabbling, please. Remember, manners cost nothing.

I'll get the ball rolling:
I can't stand the Doctor from Voyager. I find him incredibly overrated, egotistical, grating and hammy, to the point I have no interest in "holographic rights" or any medical related plots from the show, as I know he'll feature too heavily. In the beginning, when he was limited to Sickbay, he was at least a sympathetic character due to the constraints placed upon him, but as he grew he became all the more insufferable.

I find the spinoffs being less and less interesting as time passes. I'm sure part of it is nostalgia, but part of it is that they lack the "fun factor" of the original Star Trek.

They began to take themselves too seriously.

I found a lot of DS9 and Voyager to be pretty boring and derivative, honestly. To be fair, though, that may be because I began reading a lot of non-Trek sci-fi during TNG, and so ideas that might have seemed fresh and new to me in TOS and TNG before that may have ended up seeming stale because I had already read them in slightly altered form - whereas some of the books seemed to me to rip off TOS/TNG (even though they came out first). I also find the Lord of the Rings series to be a dull and plodding rip-off of Dungeons and Dragons (even though I know my perspective is actually backward), for much the same reason. ;)

I also pretty much abhor religious and homebody Bajorans. They're soooooo duuuuullll, and their beliefs make almost no sense to me (but again, to be fair, few religions really do, to me, even though I'm well-versed in a lot of them). The only three I liked were Ro Laren (atheist?), Sito Jaxa (religion unclear, but she at least seemed metropolitan - also, pretty darned cute ;) ), and Kira Nerys (though they did their darnedest to turn her mud boring in the later novels, too).

I know a lot of people thought Scott Bakula was a bad choice to play Archer, but I thought it was a perfect casting choice.

Also, even though some series I would favor over others (DS9 being my favorite), I FULLY enjoy each and every series pretty equally. They all bring something to the table... one series will bring the meat and potatoes, another will bring the drinks, another will bring the dessert, etc. I can say there are elements of them that I may dislike, but I can never say I hate any of them.

And by the same token, the whole STAR TREK vs. STAR WARS thing... absolutely unnecessary. A true science fiction fan would be able to enjoy all in some way, without resorting to "this will always better because" arguments. I am about the only person I know with quite the vast array of different shows I call myself a fan of... STAR TREK, STARGATE, BABYLON 5, FIRST WAVE, FARSCAPE, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, THE X-FILES, VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, QUANTUM LEAP, RED DWARF, DOCTOR WHO, HERCULES/XENA, HEROES, GOTHAM, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., SUPERNATURAL, AMERICAN HORROR STORY, SCREAM QUEENS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, ANDROMEDA, THE DEAD ZONE... I have many others, but you get the idea.

As long as we can take away something from a series, there is no need to pit people against each other in the fan world.

To put it in two different but equal ways...

"Can't we all just get along?"
and...
I.D.I.C.

For me? The missed potential that was voyager. Theach whole show was "ok", tng on what was superficially a smaller ship.

In theory the tension between the two crews, the ethical implications of terrorism and deals between terrorists and legitimate powers, the psychological impact of long term isolation from humanity, friends and loved ones, the compromises that must be made to function in an ongoing position of weakness and the pressures of survival were all a rich goldmine of story telling possibilities.

In practise we got watered down storylines and techno babble. We got everything that could have been awesome glossed over by a half assed creative team that seemed tired, over worked or just disinterested.

I'm not saying I hate voyager, I don't, but I do hate that it could have been so much better, that the chance was lost

I've watched about 9 episodes of TNG. The pilot and a bunch of random episodes from different seasons. I can honestly say that it is the most boring tv show I've ever tried to watch. I've read that it gets better in season 4 but I don't feel like putting in the effort to get there.

I did watch the movies and really enjoyed Generations and First Contact though.

The same goes for DS9. Heard it gets better with the Dominion War but don't feel like it.

I don't like Enterprise, it never grabbed me in any way. Of course I'm a TOS fan, I also like Voyager. I like Data from TNG and Geordi, I wish they'd shown more of their friendship. And I like DS9, Odo and Quarks bickering makes me laugh.
one other thing, I do not like the Kelvin timeline.....there I said it.

I do not worship the years of Next Gen that are almost universally beloved. That would be 4-7. I cut Next Gen in half, and the second half is the stale period, where they were coming up with episodes just to have episodes, with little SF content. The "greatness" consists of dignity and polish. It's mainly smoke and mirrors. Not vital or challenging, no jolt, no spark. It's all very sedate and safe.
--------------------
The first half IS vital, charged with life, often pushing themselves to raise the show onto a higher level. But once they reached that level, they relaxed. The pushing forward stopped, and I feel if you're not pushing forward, you retreat backward. There's no staying still.
------------------------
Even season one, as much as I used to hate it, is vital and alive and engaged with life, compared to 4-7. I respect and accept a certain amount of stumbling and mistakes, as long as a show's makers are trying hard, and sometimes succeed. Season two, despite some bad ones, is my favorite season. Three is about at the same level only more consistent. Things looked hopeful. Then that disappointing end to BOBW, then halfaway through s4 the utter blandness set in.
