Thoughts on Discovery Starfleet Uniforms (Trailer Edition)

Everyone
who has ever heard of star trek ever knows those names. Even people who have never seen the TOS knows those names, they are forever bound to trek. They are not there to drawl in the diehards who were never , ever going to be happy anyhow.
That sounds like nonsense to me. Those same people who have heard of Star Trek's Kirk and Spock will also have expectations, even if they are not to the same detail as fans. Kirk and Spock are not just names out there in the ether.. there's imagery. The diehards are not some small nothing group that should be dismissed so easily, in a more respectful manner one would call them fans. It is that mentality the producers will want to tap into. They have been sold a concept and the marketing told them this show is within spitting distance of TOS, so the expectations have been made by those who are selling Discovery. The non-diehards who just only vaguely know Spock will still have an image of him. Probably splitting his fingers and saying live long and prosper. That is the basis and although Discovery is not TOS it is pretty close to its era. What next red shirts won't exist? Oh let's send down the grey shirt to the planet with the faulty phaser. How is the enemy alien going to be able to tell the difference between the dark grey shirt, the navy shirt, the dull blue shirt and the fifty shades of other blue shirts?

You can't have it both ways. Trying to appeal to the public's affection and but then giving them something else .. shitty looking, dull, uninspiring visuals.

You can in have it both ways, nothing demands TOS look like an old TV show. We reboot looks all the time, it was done in Trek a few times now. And yes, die-hard who will boycotte this are a tiny number, most fans will go along, some may whine about the look but they will watch. The die hard who dislike everything, were never gonna be happy so yes, the smart thing is you write them off, you do not try and make them happy and shoot yourself in the foot, which is the very thing you are demanding.

TOS also includes the Kelvin look man and this is was most people expect it to look like. Not a throw back show made to only sell to trekkies.

Mirror Mirror.. I see you are a red shirt. Enjoy its status because apparently dull shirt is the new red.

Why does being a reboot or prequel have to mean different as a contrast to iconic? I get that we have the production values of our time but not all that is old is wrong. Reinvention just for its sake is not very smart. And writing off the die hards, a proven audience is wasteful. They probably will watch more so than the uninspired.

You might be surprised that it is not only just trekkies that are going to want a little color and energy. Oddly enough color is a trigger. Instead of the grey chain, why not even a small color panel? Discovery is being screened .. it is a visual medium.

There is no reason to use the 1960's other than some folks are whining over it. You always write off diehards as you can't depend on them. They will never be happy with any change, they always demand rigidity and are unwilling to watch if you violate how they think things should be.

The TOS timeline is hot now, thanks not to the 1960's TOS but the very reimaginaing you seem to hate so much. Its the new movies that caused this series to be made, so its shocking you guys think they will make it a 1960 throw back.

I would like to see your market research that proves 'you always write off diehards as you can't depend on them." That sounds like a premise tailored for a better conclusion to me. Though I do agree that there will be a pickiness.

I also disagree about TOS timelines being so hot.. but you do understand that when you write something like TOS you are referring to The Original Series? It's that trying to have it both ways again. TOS is supposedly hot but not because it's TOS, just the movie rip off. I get that you are wanting to give the reboot movies all the kudos for the timeline and justification for the dull visuals.. admittedly only seen in a dark trailer. No one expects the 1960s to be redone but it and TOS has been used to market this and don't kid yourself. A lot more people than you might like to acknowledge don't just think of the reboot era and the reboot Spock and Kirk as the real deal. References to TOS .. we'll see

Their expecation might very well be limited to Spock having pointed ears and Kirk macking on the ladies. Visually they could be expecting TOS uniforms, TWOK uniforms or even TNG uniforms, depending on what their "touchstone" for Star Trek is. Maybe none of the above as well. Or they could be wondering if there are Jedi involved.

Its pretty standard man You do not market a show/comic series/product to a small group who will scream at any try to broaden your base. And that is what is going on. The TOS look only appeals to a subset of trek fans, who are ageing ans shrinking. This is simply reality. As the years goes on they will get fewer and fewer and you must grow your fan base to keep making money. And that is what this is a business, they make money off shows.

The TOS timeline is much bigger than 4 seasons of a TV show from the 60's. It includes books, comics, and yes, the Kelvin timeline and look. When I hear Spock and Kirk, I never think of TOS, I think of the movie era versions. Whch is really just 4 years in setting after, so more or less the very same era. We simply break it up because they rebooted the look.

Keep telling yourself that.. you'd have to be living under a rock not to know about 'red' shirts and see Kirk in that tight mustard skivvy..

You'd have to be living under a rock to think such imagery is somehow universal. Get out of the nerd-o-sphere and the percentage takes a sharp drop.

People know what "red shirt " means and have no freaking clue where it came from at all. Its entered pop cultural and so is just a term to many folks.

Lol, just as I thought ;)
What do you want? A link to a poll or something? It's throw away pop entertainment. Most people have more important things on their minds than the origin of the term redshirt or the color a Kirk's tunic. I'm sure most of the guys I work with do not care.

The only way my wife understands "red shirts" is Facebook memes.

The majority of people I encounter at work know "Star Trek" and "live long and prosper" and "Beam me up, Scotty." Most do not recognize the origin beyond a TV show reference, if that. "Mr. Spock " is often confused with "Dr. Spock" in some places, if they know the reference at all.

As a general rule, the pop culture memes are better known than the actual source material.

I wonder if we should petition to get the Forum avatars updated to a range of current ones? Instead of red shirt newbies could attain the status of 'blah shirt'? I feel sorry for the character seen on the trailer.. they look ordinary.
