That sounds like nonsense to me. Those same people who have heard of Star Trek's Kirk and Spock will also have expectations, even if they are not to the same detail as fans. Kirk and Spock are not just names out there in the ether.. there's imagery. The diehards are not some small nothing group that should be dismissed so easily, in a more respectful manner one would call them fans. It is that mentality the producers will want to tap into. They have been sold a concept and the marketing told them this show is within spitting distance of TOS, so the expectations have been made by those who are selling Discovery. The non-diehards who just only vaguely know Spock will still have an image of him. Probably splitting his fingers and saying live long and prosper. That is the basis and although Discovery is not TOS it is pretty close to its era. What next red shirts won't exist? Oh let's send down the grey shirt to the planet with the faulty phaser. How is the enemy alien going to be able to tell the difference between the dark grey shirt, the navy shirt, the dull blue shirt and the fifty shades of other blue shirts?
Everyone who has ever heard of star trek ever knows those names. Even people who have never seen the TOS knows those names, they are forever bound to trek. They are not there to drawl in the diehards who were never , ever going to be happy anyhow.
You can't have it both ways. Trying to appeal to the public's affection and but then giving them something else .. shitty looking, dull, uninspiring visuals.
