Thoughts about the design

I was looking at the new toys for the movie and it got me thinking; the new tricorder, communicator and even the ship, look like they are design that stems from Enterprise. The tricorder is only a little bigger and the communicator looks like it is based on the style we saw in ENT with some upgrades. Just wondering what everyone else thinks.

I'm sure someone with the screenname "Enterprisesucks" would think the exact opposite. :)

Seriously though, the only attributes I can see are that these props look like they were made specifically so that Playmates could market them as toys.

I do feel they are a bit Toyish too. I agree also that they have more of a resemblance with stuff seen on Enterprise than TOS. I don't think it was intentional. I think they both were trying to update the look of TOS and the ideas they came up with were very similar since they are making the technology design from the 21st Century prespective.

They are toys. The real fine, truly collectible stuff will come later.

OT, that the props would appear to be descended from ENT is logical.

i can deal with the look of the tricorder and communicator but the ship and the phaser look horrible to me. i also hate nero's ship. the only design i've seen that i like from this movie is the kelvin.....sorta.

I guess it makes sense they'd look the same as both are ( with Enterprise, were) trying to do a more modern version of something we knew from the 60s. Enterprise tried to do the generation before, and this movie is just trying to update the look for the 21st century.

Ditto, I love the Kelvin but the rest is shite.

I don't think the designs were based closely on anything recent. One occasional poster here who evidently worked on the movie has said that some designers from previous Trek were employed early on in development but that they left because "they couldn't let go of the old designs."

Why do you say that?

ummmmmm..... because it is?

That can't be the reason, because it isn't so. :)

It CAN BE the Reason, if one doesn't hold strictly to Your line of Reasoning.

I am very curious to hear the opinion of Folks who like Trek for what They Remember, but don't come to post on this BBS.

My mom and GF are closet Classic Trekkers and I've purposly not talked about any of the details (other than the movies opening date & if they are going) so as to see how they really feel about the changes.

I'm kinda-sorta looking forward to THAT Conversation.

I like it. Simple, I got no problems with people not liking it too, it their choice.

But I would dislike seeing the original 1960's design in the movie, not that I dislike the design, it was good for its time but...it would make fresh audiences back way off and those audiences trek requires to gain a stable heart beat.
