Those oh-so-neat palm phasers from TOS

Never saw 'em again. Like to have seen Sisko use one on a Jem, in a stealthy sort of way

They stopped using em after TNG season 1 because they didn't really show up on camera and it looked like they were shooting phasers from their fingers. HMS designed a new Type 1 for First Contact I believe, but it never went past being a single prototype.

OK thanx, now I know. Still woulda been cook to see Sisko slip it out of his shirt sleeve like a Derringer.

I wish they would have used them on DS9, along with the TOS phaser effects. I always find those huge beams from TOS to be much more epic, as a phaser blast should be, than the comparatively wimpy later incarnations of that effect which were very disappointing. :wtf:

They did use one in Voyager though. In the episode where the crew discovers the Species 8472 recreation of Starfleet Academy, the type I phasers are used to deliver nanoprobes to incapacitate an 8472. I think. Don't hold me to it though, as it's been a long time since I've seen the ep. I don't even remember the episode name...

The episode was In the Flesh, and I believe you're right, I think we see them use a type 1 when they're trying to blend into the simulation early on.

The Type-II phasers from the Voyager era were smaller than the Type-II's from TNG, though, so it might have been one of them in In The Flesh. I remember looking at my toy phaser from TNG in comparison with the ones on VOY and easily spoting differences.

^ In the episode Kim tells Chakotay though as he hands him his phaser that it's a Type I modified to fire Borg Nanoprobes with the beam.

Yeah, they used the type-IIs from TNG for like the first year or two, then switched to the newer, curvier phasers and tricorders when FC came out.

I guess they got that memo from Starfleet, eh? :p

Actually the 'boomerang' phaser design debuted on DS9 season 4 and Voyager season 2 before their appearance in First Contact IIRC - the new tricorders, too. They appeared on TV in 95, and in ST:FC in 96. You can tell because they're around for DS9's fourth season, but they changed to the ST:FC uniforms to match the film's release date, with season 5's Rapture.

Apart from "In the Flesh", the last appearance of the tiny TNG phaser would seem to be TNG "The Game" where Wesley effects his escape with one.

Yeah, it would have been nice to see more of that design - or not see, as concealed carry would have been the main reason for using that model.

Yup. I always liked the Type 1 too.

Why does that site have a picture of Ezri using the one Starfleet weapon that isn't a phaser on it's front page? ;) My inner fanboy is unimpressed

The design of Defiant itself always reminded me of the TOS palm-phasers. That death could be so compact works into both their aspects.
