This is the best message board on the Internet

To be fair, I don't even try.

I'm right there with you.

Mal uses it in Firefly's "Out of Gas", just FYI.

It means basically the same as "whine", but I guess there's a subtle difference in connotation?

Well, Mal also spoke a lot of bad Mandarin, but you don't expect me to understand that, do you? :p

If you were a true Firefly fan, you would already know. [/spoiling for a fight]

I don't have a ton of online message board experience, but I do have some. It's obvious to me that the type of people this board attracts are quite friendly in general. It's not always wine and roses, but I see very little outright meanness here, and lord knows there's plenty of that out there on the internets elsewhere. :klingon:

Typically I would have been called at least a dozen nasty names by now, but great restraint has been demonstrated so far. I've almost dug myslef into a couple of holes, but I'd like to think that I know when to retreat before the hole gets too deep. ;)

Anyway, still glad I found this place. Wish I had found it much sooner.

Spoiling for a fight? Is it Unification Day already?

... hence "freakin' hard to mod sometimes".

The problem is many posters think they know what's going on behind the curtain. But, you just really have no idea until you're there. (For instance, I'm completely clueless about these things.)

Then, you get really irritated because you know there's no way you'll be able to convince some to behave like rational people or believe that you're not doing what they want based on some odd preconceived notion of how the board makes money or who "the board (mods)" favor.

It's weird; it's kind of hard for me to explain, so I hoped that made sense.

Anyway, I've learned that, if I start feeling like I'm not being treated well on the board or that the mods aren't doing their job effectively, I should probably take a break.

When I come back, tempers are down and things are more in perspective for me, and I can enjoy the culture and general attitude at Big Blue much more. :bolian:

Edited because I can't type... too much coffee today.

Very well put. BTW, it's nice to see you around here. How's kick3?

Thank you. :)

She's good... directing a choir in a border town and doing well with it.

I just think that it's important to get perspective, you know?

I liked this place more back when there were Grand Miscellaneous Contests and that list of how many posts everyone did in a week and HunterX cartoons. Also a lot of my friends left, or aren't as prolific.

But it's still a good board.

Those certainly were the golden years.

Yes, this is definitely the best MASSAGE board on the internet. I always leave this place with a happy ending.

I've been here 10 years, I guess they must be doing something right.

I don't mind TNZ - necessary evil. I remember this place when there was no TNZ, imagine that! :wtf: People would try to have a nice chat about whatever idiocy Janeway got up to this week and some bozo would upend the whole thread with Monica Lewinsky babble. Believe me, it's better this way.

What month is it?

It's nice to see fellow Browncoats come a callin'. :D

I appreciate the people, and, although I know there is still some contention (from the usual suspects, myself included), it is a nice place for discussion these days. :bolian:

Unless you happen to have an opinion a certain clique of self-conglaturatory mods and their favourite unwarnable posters don't agree with.

I know I gave you a hard time before, but I honestly don't know who you're referring to when you talk about "self-congratulatory mods and their favourite unwarnable posters" and I'd really like you'd to be more specific so I can have some small understanding of your attitude.

I'm guessing you're going to decline to be more specific on the grounds of not wanting to be warned or something like that, which is fair enough although it seems a bit rude to take vague jabs at people. If you don't want to talk about it in public then please, feel free to PM me. I really would like more details because issues of fairness and such interest me, especially in a place like this where I have invested quite a bit of myself, and I'd like to know where you're coming from.

To be fair, I don't even try.

I didn't either. And from what I recall, behind the scenes back then generally consisted of drunken flirting and a weekly ENTERPRISER!!! thread by Lisa. And then the threads would all be leaked by Troll Kingdom and there would be obligatory outrage. Those were the days...

Hermiod and I agree on very little, and have had our issues with each other..but on this one I agree.

But even with that, its a good place. But you know what Abe Lincoln said about all governments...

I've been here over 8 years now. The main reason I am is still here is due to the community, and many of the folks in the lounges. I've seen many friends leave due to different reasons and in that time I've met other posters.

*raises hand*

:D

But you missed the Caveat. You are a regular, for the most part. ;)

Still, TrekBBS can't be that bad if you keep coming back to talk sports :)

Lately I've been looking for other forums to discuss sports, as there isn't enough people who want to discuss the sport I like to post about. Yet to find anywhere.
It's an Australian word too. "Whinging Poms" being the classic Aussie term for Brits. :D
No-one can whinge like an Aussie when they're whinging about Whinging Poms. It's a good accent to whinge in.

:D
Especially when it's sports related.

Do you have a recent example of wanton thread locking?

The recent Thor thread on SF&F is a good example.

In what way? There was a mod notification on the thread, so Neroon closed it temporarily for review and to allow cooler heads to prevail. Upon reopening the thread the same people went right back to the same hostile back and forth with accusations of racism and trolling. So, in order to avoid what would inevitably continue on in a downward spiral until infractions would have to be handed out, Neroon closed the thread.

Not out of protecting anyone who has mod favoritism or who is part of any "clique" - because there were people close to the line on both sides - but just because believe it or not, in general we really don't like having to give out infractions except as a last ditch thing. I can't find any fault with Neroon's closing of that thread. It was the sensible thing to do to avoid people getting in trouble, which would not have been an alternative you or others would have been that happy with either, I believe.

The way to go in that situation would have been to either contact Neroon via PM to ask if you could have the topic reopened with a promise of ignoring any rude comments from the other side (or notifying on them), or to ask one (or more) of the Miscellaneous mods if starting a more general topic about casting against a character's established background and appearance would be okay here since Misc. allows more leeway for political and controversial issues like that.

At some point though I really think you need to examine the fact that you seem to have pretty much a consistently negative view of every staff member you deal with with any regularity on top of a large number of members of the board, not to mention the entire atmosphere of the board itself according to your comments in this thread. Who's the one common denominator that connects all of those very different people and forums together? Maybe the negativity is coming from there instead of from everyone else.

I don't want to get into an argument with you or anything, but honestly, this was a lighthearted topic and you really kind of turned it into a downer by saying how much the staff sucks, and certain forums suck, and certain members suck. It's really not fair to kind of force everyone else to share in your own misery all the time. If you're going to stick around here (this is not asking you to leave) you need to make some effort to make things better too instead of fixating purely on the negative all the time.

Look, I know we haven't gotten along in the past, but I'm not saying this to try and insult or attack you. If you're genuinely not happy here something needs to change, and that effort has to be a two-way street. If there are things you'd like us to change, communicate them to us. But the constant negativity needs to stop, because it's draining on people.
