This is the best message board on the Internet

Doesn't mean Roger Wilco was wrong either. ;)

Again, maybe so. Maybe I am "whingeing", maybe I'm not. It doesn't really matter.

Some of the worst posters are also the most prolific, so I guess the ad money is worth the trouble. Don't want to ban your best customers even if it ruins the atmosphere on the board in general.

*raises hand*

:D

But you missed the Caveat. You are a regular, for the most part. ;)

Still, TrekBBS can't be that bad if you keep coming back to talk sports :)

No it's not, but it's still not a good as it once was. I chalk it up to kind of like moving on with life. You go to college, make a ton of college friends and then move out never seeing them again. Those who stay to "catch up on old times" either are old, or manage to "fit in" anyway.

The best (and most ironic) thing about this board is I haven't been banned.

Yet.

Of course, they compensate for it by mostly ignoring me.

Unless you happen to have an opinion a certain clique of self-conglaturatory mods and their favourite unwarnable posters don't agree with.

What can I say? I've been warned here before.

Don't get me wrong, some people earn their warnings (not saying you did, I don't know what you were warned for). A lot of people earn a lot more than a warning and don't even get that.

Yeah... I kind of flamed a guy I considered a troll because I was on a crusade to stop a certain type of thread about Janeway.

:alienblush:

I'll admit, I deserved it.

I'll also admit that it's freakin' hard to mod this place sometimes.

Fair enough.

Yes, I don't doubt that, but that's kind of my point - some of the mods don't even try. They're usually too busy encouraging poor behaviour and often engaging in it themselves.

Then there are the others who try too hard - locking threads for no reason and taking out their lack of coffee on the board.

People can have a mature conversation about their likes ,and dislikes without it turning Junior High school.

Just thought I'd thank the owners of this site for the great environment they have created.:techman:

clearly you've never read one of the Dead Janeway threads in the Trek Lit forum.

(quick story version: Janeway was killed off in a TNG novel. Lots of militant Janeway fans who never read the books keep bitching about it and demanding she return, swearing they'll never read the books until she does, even though they never read them before and can't understand why their opinions aren't being listened to. they also want Janeway to go back to being captain of Voyager and the stories to be reset back to the TV series, basically. and anyone who disagrees is a mysogonistic Voyager hater)

Having now seen how things are handled behind the scenes, I think it is unfair to say the mods "don't even try."

Do you have a recent example of wanton thread locking?

Watching the sort of BS that goes on in some of the Trek-related forums, it's a wonder they're kept open at all. Many posters are completely unwilling to compose themselves and act like sensible human beings.

... hence "freakin' hard to mod sometimes".

The problem is many posters think they know what's going on behind the curtain. But, you just really have no idea until you're there. (For instance, I'm completely clueless about these things.)

Then, you get really irritated because you know there's no way you'll be able to convince some to behave like rational people or believe that you're not doing what they want based on some odd preconceived notion of how the board makes money or who "the board (mods)" favor.

It's weird; it's kind of hard for me to explain, so I hoped that made sense.

Anyway, I've learned that, if I start feeling like I'm not being treated well on the board or that the mods aren't doing their job effectively, I should probably take a break.

When I come back, tempers are down and things are more in perspective for me, and I can enjoy the culture and general attitude at Big Blue much more. :bolian:

Edited because I can't type... too much coffee today.

My brain derails anytime I see the topic "whingeing."

I'm right there with you.

Mal uses it in Firefly's "Out of Gas", just FYI.

It means basically the same as "whine", but I guess there's a subtle difference in connotation?

Actually I think they're pretty much the same. Although whine (for me) has more of a sense of the tone of voice (like a five-year-old - I speak from experience) whereas whinge is just the complaining.

Joss Whedon also grew up in England, so that's probably where he gets it from. (EDIT: Actually I'm making this up, I think I'm getting him mixed up with John Kovalic)

It's an Australian word too. "Whinging Poms" being the classic Aussie term for Brits. :D
