this is not good. In hospital.

Sounds like they're trying to exclude all possible causes of a positive blood culture for Streptococcus, which is a sensible thing to do if they can't find a positive source for the infection. It's always good for ID doctors to pounce upon even the slightest symptom if no obvious source can be found - the most surprising things can be found that way.

Still, IV antibiotics are still the first line of treatment here, and it's only been 24 hours. If they start having an effect on the infection and a source can be found, then hopefully you'll be out of there sooner than later.

Get well soon. :)
That is basically what he said, they have 3 options, they're treating me the general treatment while they know for sure. Sounds a bit like a episode of house lo

Good luck with the MRI, Bob. I had one once. You'll be fine as long as you keep still. Keep your eyes closed, the tube's a bit narrow. Hope you have a better night tonight. Hope there are some pretty nurses. ;)

Good luck Bob. You'll be out of there in no time, I hope. :techman:

Remember, the hospital food is now approved by Lloyd Grossman. Doesn't that make you feel better.......

Who's he?

A TV presenter who got into the branded-food business. He produces, among other things, a range of pasta sauces which are watery and unpleasant.

That's the bugger. His sauces fit his surname...

Have you got a TV in your room Bob? There's some fun stuff on tonight, including a New Tricks (I know I know but bear with me) spoof on the X Files. I'm going to make up a tick list of cliches for it.
Yeah, there's a telly, but much like the phone suffers from terrible signals.

I've had 2 more bouts of coughing blood today but oxygen seems to be keeping it under control.
Saw the infectious disease specialist and good news/bad news, almost certainly not swine flu, but he now thinks it's possible it's a bone infection with my back pain. So spinal X-rays mri scan, and and echo on my heart cos they just did a general abdominal echo earlier.

Geez, you like to get your moneys-worth from the NHS, don't you? :p

Seriously, stay strong dude. Hope you feel better soon.

hi all, just been awaken for another bag of antibiotics, struggled to get up and in to the chair. Guess I took too long to get the mask on, another bloody (ha ha) coughing fit., how sat here half asleep, shivering and in pain with me back, who wants to swap?

Seems a bit barbaric to make you get up out of bed - can you not have the oxygen and antibiotics lying down?

yeah, but I want to keep getting up of my back seizes, guess i'd already waited too long. Problem with the oxygen is the fact if I keep on too long it dries my thought out and makes me cough if I don't use it enough enough it starts to tickle and itch till I cough. Soon't know what's worse...

I know this will sound corny (again) but how about applying some heat to your back while you sit up? I discovered when I had severe pain that a hot water bottle has some kind of relief even if it's only psychological.

to be honest they're not offering me much of anything, and being in isolation I have very little option until someone tells them to do something.. I did try a hot water bottle at home it turned it from pain to ache which I guess is better, but then it ot worse. My friend says it's cos I fell asleep with it threa and it was on for rand a half hours. I also tried a hot bath, worked the first time but not their after.

I would give it a go for an hour then, at least it would stop you shivering. If it works for a short time then that's better than nothing. The more morphine-based stuff you take the more resistance you have to it so it's worth a try?

just been for the MRI, the registrar and said 'what's this coughing all about? I don't like it and want you to stop.' then we had a bit of a chat about how hard it is to get all the terry pratchett books. He looked at my mri results but not being his area all he could say was there's no obvious or big infection in the bones. But did say will probably be monday beforee detailed results he's also going to try oramorph and a different one and see if any help. So here's fingers crossed for that.
He's not one of you guys is he? You can tell me...

Not me but I can send you any TP books you're missing easy peasy. Not the plays though if that's what you're looking for.

So what's the diagnosis at the moment Bob? Are they still saying pneumonia with endocarditis? But they don't know what your lower back pain is caused by?
