Things About Fanboys That have Always Frustrate Me

Nedersong

Captain
The biggest things that really gets me frustrated about fanboys is tha they just love to make sport on tearing things apart just to see if they can ruin. And they'll grasp at any tiny little straw they can to make it out like it's the worse thing to ever happen in the entire history of the world.

Example, one of the stupidest things to get all hostile over was the show "Enterprise" and it's theme song, "Faith Of The Heart". The fanbpoys were very upset over it simply because it had lyrics that were sung to it and that had never been done before. I mean they were so upset they were frothing at the mouth over this.

Every single tiny mistake, every single error, will betreated in this manner by the fanboys when the next movie comes out. They will be looking for these things and they will be very upset over it because to them it's just a sport to destroy a movie any way they can.

And I blame them for the demise of the franchise.

They are what's wrong with Trekdom.

And they need to go the way of the Dodo and just let things be,

But they can't.

They don't care about the show. It's just sport to them.

They only care about bringing things down.

And they will do their best to bring down the movie.

And we can not let them win.

I thought Fanboys were the ones who just loved everything and want all starships to have 3 warp nacelles?

You may be surprised at who complains about what and what other things they will tolerate. Some people have different pet peeves.

But you're right...nobody needs to complain about every little thing, and if you do...it should be in the normal adult fashion of "I didn't care much for the design of the blahblah or something. The problem is if you post that then that thead will soon sink into bickering. That happens very fast with Trek fans on this board. That's why I almost never go to the Neutral Zone. Look at how rude and silly fans get talking about phasers and TMP uniforms!

As I recall, the main arguments were that it was either a bad song, or that the lyrics (with all that 'faith' stuff) was a bit antithetical to Star Trek's secularism.

Personally? I think it was bad. I would have been fine with a song. I would have been fine with a non-orchestral piece. Just so long as it's good. I'll concede I may have a very narrow definition of what is good in music, but those are just my tastes.

And I blame them for the demise of the franchise.

Why, thank you, but you're giving us far too much credit. I doubt the internet or Trekkies in general played all that integral a role in the demise of the franchise. If there were enough fanboys who would bash Enterprise all day long on internet BBS but also watch it religiously, it might have survived. I didn't bash it much... but I did stop watching.

Did someone say fangirls? Where, where?!
They're like unicorns, dragons, and fans of Gentry Lee: Don't exist.

S'funny, that's what brings me back to this otherwise useless-for-another-half-a-year forum.

My unicorn disagrees, while my dragon has no opinion (so typical of dragons not to stick their necks out). And who the fuck is Gentry Lee?

Speaking for the fangirl contingent: after the first time I was exposed to that gawdAWFUL song, I just zapped it for the rest of ENT's tenure. What were they thinking?

And it's ITS! ITS ITS ITS! AAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

To give Faith of the Heart some credit... its heart (ha, ha) was in the right place. So many of ENT's problems stem from its tired repetition of already dusty cliches; Faith of the Heart was an attempt to do something different to help the series define its own voice. Dismal, unfortunately, but the idea is not half bad.

And who the fuck is Gentry Lee?

He co-authored the Rama sequels. (Or maybe mainly authored, anyway, he's credited as a co-author...) They're not popular, to put it mildly. I was going to say 'Unicorns, utopias and fans of Ursula K. Le Guin', but then I worried fans of that authoress would attack me. Probably for using the archaic term 'authoress.'

Fanboys can be fun to have a good debate with on various topics as long as both parties realize it's just for fun and shouldn't be taken seriously.

What irritates me are the subset of fanboys (and every forum has their resident one) that jump into threads only to complain about the particular show. I mean, it's okay to not like something, but to continually bitch about it again and again and again has the tendency to grind the nerves. It's like "Okay! We get it!"

Example, one of the stupidest things to get all hostile over was the show "Enterprise" and it's theme song, "Faith Of The Heart".

Its = possessive
It's = It Is
Its' = DOESN'T EXIST

I'm getting old and senile. Until the follow-up post, I thought Kegek was disparaging the lead vocalist for Rush. Gentry, Geddy, Gentry, Geddy -- learn it, know it, live it.

Sir Rhosis

Carry on bitchin' about fanboys.

Me, too. I thought, boy, is that person incorrect! :lol: No fan base, ha.

My main reaction is: Not having a negative reaction to Faith of the Heart -- or as I "affectionately" call it, Courage of the Liver -- means you have no taste! :p -- RR

You know what irritates me even more than fanboys? Critics who possess poor grammar and spelling skills! :p As in, if you're going to post a thread, be sure it's spelled correctly! As in for this thread title, it should be "Frustrated!" -- RR

I thoroughly enjoyed them, myself. Satisfying exploration of the Rama starship and it's universe.

The one thing that really frosts my bonnet is the notion that disagreeing with someone about what they hate about Star Trek or even worse liking something that other fans hate somehow makes you less of a "true" fan.

I feel ashamed to admit this but I liked "Faith of the Heart". Well, at least the first version. When they tweaked it for the later season it lost the charm it had for me.

I don't quite get the big deal though. If you don't like an intro then can't you just mute it until it's over or fast forward if watching it recorded?

I think it started back during the Rick Berman years, when we realized that the folks in charge of the franchise didn't really understand what Star Trek was supposed to be about, and were just milking the golden cow for as long as they could turn a profit. The attitude began to emerge that to be a really-and-truly dyed-in-the-wool Trekker you had to refuse to eagerly lap up the watered-down, inferior Star Trek that Paramount was pushing. New stuff like the TNG movies, Voyager, and later Enterprise had to be beneath you. It wasn't good enough to be a Star Trek fan, you had to be a Star Trek connoisseur. In fact, the depth of your devotion to Star Trek could be measured by how much of the franchise you disliked.

And now we've become a cynical lot who are skeptical of any new Star Trek project that comes down the pike and instantly look for any reason at all to dislike it. Even if the new movie turns out to be the most excellent, orgasmic piece of science-fiction filmmaking known to man and grosses $500 million dollars, hardcore Star Trek connoisseurs will emerge from the theater frothing with anger and will flood the Internet with hateful diatribes about how J.J. Abrams violated canon and his head should be placed on a pike outside CBS/Paramount/Viacom headquarters as an example to future canon violators.
