Oooh you pessimistic bunch of bastards.
I don't care how many Dalek stories they tell, as long as they're well written. One a year is fine by my, provided that it's a good one.
See, that's the problem. With the exception of "Dalek" and to a lesser extent "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" (and I'll admit it was a bit over the top in some parts), the Dalek stories haven't been all that great in the new series.
I felt everything with the 9th Doctor was excellent. He finds the last Dalek, fallen to Earth from the Time War. Great character stuff for both The Doctor, and in a weird way The Dalek. It showed us how just one Dalek was an unstoppable killing machine, and it was really Rose's humanity that saved both the Earth, the Dalek, and in a funny kind of way, The Doctor.
Then, as the perfect finale to the 9th Doctor, they're back. Great, works because we thought they were gone from the series, we had ONE in a fab episode, and now we get the mega finale to the 9th Doctor's saga. Best of all, the Daleks beat the Doctor, and Rose saves him. In return, he gives his life to save her. Great stuff.
Daleks showing up at the height of the Cyber Men conflict? Sure, okay, works well enough as this is Rose's finale. Nothing makes me and my wife laugh harder than the pissing contest between the Cyber Men and the Daleks. "You are only superior at one thing! Dying!" There's nothing greater than villains facing off against each other.
Daleks in Manhatten was a mistake. Use the Daleks for important episodes, and above all else sparingly. This New York saga was neither. I'd almost rather rewatch Fear Her. Almost.
Then we get to Journey's End. Again with the Daleks?!?! Why?!!?!? Listen clearly: You need to have a reason for having the Daleks BESIDES JUST HAVING THEM ON SCREEN TO LOOK AT!
Yes, yes. Exterminate. We've got it as our ringtone. Anything other than catchphrases? No?
Journey's End might have been a good place to have them return if it was indeed Journey's End. But this was not the 10th Doctor's swansong, nor did anyone aside from Harriet Jones (or so you think! cutaway! ha! ugh.) even die. The idea of all the Doctor's companions coming back for one last epic battle was a clever one, but too many characters from the spin-off shows (Luke, Gwen, etc.) clogged up the pacing. The Daleks didn't do anything new other than be "more dangerous than ever." I don't get what the bloody point to Davros was. What did he do for the plot? Rose's inter-dimensional doctor-honing leaps were never fully explained, nor did she really do anything for the plot either. Captain Jack was pulling devices out of his ass again, and Marhta...was she in this? I forget (not really, but I use sarcasm here to prove a point). Oh, yes. And the Daleks. After having them spin around like toys with such speed as to break through fourth walls, we hear they are all destroyed again forever.
Until now. When they come back. And do what, precisely? I worry we're going to get another New York style Dalek story.
The Daleks have to offer more than one-line catchphrases and goofy tongue-in-cheek refrences to their corny design. "Dalek" was a superior episode. "Bad Wolf/ Parting Of The Ways" were superior episodes. Give me substance. Give me thought. Give me clever ideas. Leave the fantastic-plastic hollowness at home.
