As far as the non main characters go, the killing order is this:

1st = 1 pip
2nd = 2 pips
3rd = civillian
4th = pain in the ass whiner

They were on a mineral survey. The ship crashed after they got there.

On a mineral survey, a search and rescue mission or go see the pretty stars survey near or in Dominion Space is a dangerous mission to begin with; the entire party should have known that the moment they were assigned or volunteered for the mission.

They know and it is not too far fetched since todays scientific astronauts using the space shuttles to go up know, that the take off could be their last time on earth. That's why they are considered heroes, because they despite the risk of loosing their life are doing the job up there.

Well of course todays astronauts know the risks. But those ensigns who end up dead for no reason probably did not imagine dieing in the worst possible ways along with their friends while the senior staff can live through anything.

Those ensigns still graduated from the Academy and were presumably trained in avoiding risks. And you can't be trained in how to avoid a risk that nobody knows exists in the first place.

Honestly, I find the idea that they never imagined they might end up in these sorts of situations a bit hard to swallow. Maybe not the situations in particular, but they knew space was a dangerous place.

I'm sure even modern archaeologists and scientists going to war torn countries are sure they'll be facing a few problems with the local authorities/bandits/looters/landmines/etc. Knowing how violent the galaxy seems to be at large, I think they would expect similar things.

Perhaps it's not very realistic, but it _is_ the nature of television. The same way the Enterprise and DS9 aren't going to be destroyed in the course of the series...most likely.

Also, in most cases they _did_ know the risks. They may be scientists/engineeers, but they're also Starfleet officers. I doubt you can get through the Academy without hearing all kinds of tales about how things went badly for your predecessors.

Plus...hello, they're on a spaceship. That in and of itself is a risk.
