We're not talking about in-universe rules. We're talking about real-world rules. The network and advertisers aren't going to take "in their world it makes sense!" as an answer if they're uncomfortable with the show having a middle-aged man engaging in a sexual relationship with a teenager.

The only people even suggesting that their relationship is romantic in nature are you guys. The show is clearly showing a more brother-sister relationship forming between them. There hasn't been anything romantic about it at all, and if there is, it's entirely on Beth's side -- and "schoolgirl crushes" are as incredibly common in fiction.

Yeah, despite Daryl's upbringing, I always felt there was a "southern gentleman" aspect to it. He just wouldn't entertain the notion.

I doubt he would either and I sort-of doubt Beth is "his type." But, I'd say the same about Carol too.

On the "shipping" business it's common in the fandom it seems as it was brought up during The Talking Dead last night.

I'm just glad I wasn't the only one who got a vibe about Beth having a thing for Daryl. Makes me feel a lot less pervy to know I wasn't the only one. :P

I don't want it to happen, don't think it will, or should. But I did wonder quite a few times, especially when she was so intent on getting drunk and then getting him to drink and then "have you ever" game and I was just leery of them using that as a means to have something happen and I was glad it didn't, but for most of the episode the subtext was... unusual...

Here's the problem... She's a young girl, not even a woman by a long shot, TWICE WIDOWED, and she doesn't have a whole lot of choices...

Daryl is an old man and he has this fantastic choice available to him called keeping his dick in his trousers and raise the girl like a daughter/niece like he should because it's super creepy to go there with someone you have had parental control over.

How old is the actress because I'm thinking that the character was 12 when we met her and probably 14 years old now.

Emily Kinney, Date of birth: August 13, 1985 (age 28 years)

    Wow.

    That is disturbing.

28 year old woman playing a 12 year old girl?

    Fucking vegetarians.

Wouldn't it be funny if Beth was 28, and everyone in the group thought that she was 12?

(14 year old Carl is waiting for the 28 year old woman to go through puberty before he asks her on a date.)

No they actually had a segment on The talking Dead about it and the loud comedian actually gets up and starts doing the "slap dat @ss" dance (whatever that's called) and the the host does it too, talking about Daryl tappin' that @ss.
TBH it made me uncomfortable so I agree with what Trekker4747 was saying as we don't know Beth's age and I personally think she is still under 18.
Hell Norman Reedus is 45 and Emily Kinney is 28, I kinda think that would be a tad creepy if they hooked up IRL.

OK update, the Wiki (which I know may not be 100% accurate) is saying she is 18 but here's the thing IMO, if you knew someone wasn't legal and then waited until they were all while watching out for her like a big brother and then started messing around with her you are a super creepy douche.

Wow, I thought this episode was very dramatic, and epic in a Character sense. Sorry to see so many calling it "Filler" and "fluff".

I have a rather closer relationship with Drug addicts and Drunks, then I want (trust me, I want the HELL AWAY from the drama of of it all, it's not my life, it's someone else's life, I can't get away from) and so much of this episode, hit home for me, so hard.

It really rang true of folks who disregard proper priorities for getting trashed. The Anger, the breakdowns, the irresponsibility of getting trashed, the symbolism of Darryl burning his family home, the purity of Darryl finally letting loose, The whole Beth Darryl connection...

There's this bit in the bible where these two sisters who were quite wary of their biological clocks, but every time they got themselves boyfriends, their father would go on a rampage and kill these young men they were developing feelings for before anything sexy could happen. The girls sick of this, got their father drunk, waited till he passed out and then raped him. They kept doing this until they were both pregnant and try as he might their father could not find and murder his daughters baby daddies who made his grandchildren, so the sisters didn't have to feel guilty about that.

Booze plus I Never is a total com'on.

JB Smoothe said that Daryl had to get him a "piece of that ass" to Emily and Norman.

    They blushed and laughed.

I think the country club just showed how at the time that the survivors still were believing in the class differences and murdering the upper class people, only to miss the point that they were all in the same boat under the great ZA equalizer. If they hadn't decreased their strength in numbers, they might have held off the walkers and survived another day. This theme about depending on each other for survival is illustrated again and again in this show. Americans are all about individualism, but this just gets you killed in the ZA.
Beth just felt cheated out of usual teenage stuff like hanging out at the mall, texting, underage drinking, and playing stupid sleepover games. Daryl had no references for this stuff because of his upbringing. Life has always been hard on him. But they understand each other a little better now. Time to move on to the next group of survivors....

Oh, I agree it's distasteful if she was under 18 - I never imagined the character was quite that young.

And if she is an adult, then if the actress is playing ~10 years under her age why couldn't the actor be doing the same? Did I miss the "Daryl turns 40" episode?

Norman who plays Dayrl is 45.

Even at minus 10, pretending that he's 35, it'd only be okay for him to go after an 18 year old if she was a stranger.

You all know that little Dawny and Xander are doing it in the Buffy comics?

Lots of harsh reviews here. This was an excellent character episode. I'd rather watch stories like this than tanks blowing up buildings. Both of the actors put in fine performances, and the development and background were were perfect. Daryl's speech during the target practice scene was wonderful. I'm glad they both survived the episode.

Who said Daryl is supposed to be 40-something? We cannot base his age on the actor.

Please. In the U.S., that is old news.

Really? So, let's get this straight: the public is comfortable with an entire series focused on a public threat like a serial killer (Dexter), or a criminal biker gang (Sons of Anarchy) but an adult male in a relationship with an 18 year old woman is in the uncomfortable category?!?

Take a look at your idea one more time, Trekker4747.

A new 40 minute Romantic Drama started in a New Zealand a month back about the complications of a 24 year old man dating a 39 year old woman and it's just charming called "Stepdave".

Beth is not just 18, she's super 18.

    A moral religious innocent farmgirl.

24 hours earlier, did she watch someone cut her fathers head off?

She wants to take the edge off, and Daryl is bogarting all the penises.

    You can hardly blame her.

But you can blame daryl if he allows himself to be seduced.

We've been *told* how old Beth is, meaning the actress is playing a younger person. We've not been told how old Daryl is so the only thing we have to go on is the actor's age. Given what we know of his personal history and just on appearances it'd be hard to say he's someone closet to Beth's age making a romantic relationship between the two "less creepy."

Perhaps you're not familiar with how America(ns) react to sexual matters verses violence. Consider how much violence and content a PG-13 rated movie or even a broadcast network TV show in prime-time can get away with verse what happens when sexual content is added. Usually making a movie Rated-R, or making a show unsuitable for Prime Time if it can be on TV at all.

Remember a few years ago when the whole country lost it's shit because they saw a nipple during the half-time show of a football game for half a second?

America is very, very puritanical when it comes to sexual matters, even more so when the sexual matters concerning young women with older men (again, talking about characters here not the actors.) Hell, most Americans are perfectly okay with having guns around even if it means the occasional mass-shooting but think about letting two men marry? Well THAT we have to contain and stop!
