The unnecessary reboot/remake of the week thread

I'm sure they've made movies over worse premises.

I can't think of any right at this moment, but I'm sure they're out there.

...

It'll come to me, give it a minute...

the board game Battleship comes to mind.
Yeah, that one was pretty absurd on its face, but it had some interesting bits to it that still resonate, at least for me.

The double-amputee US Army officer, LTC Mick Canales was a Gulf War vet IRL, Colonel Greg Gadson, who was Commandant of Ft Belvoir around the time I was contracting down there. He was obviously not the greatest actor, since that was never his thing, but he was one of the greatest base commanders Belvoir ever had, and the film itself sought to elevate those who have served for generations.

The one scene where the old vets start appearing on the top deck, almost like resurrected ghosts, to help fire up the Missouri on its final mission (to AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" no less) still gets me thoroughly emotional every time I see it. I'm kind of getting that way right now as I'm typing this, recalling that sequence. I just can't explain it - hits me every time I watch or even think about it.

It is a mindless summer action flick to be sure, but at the same time, some bits of it had real heart, the likes of which I see in very few big-budget Hollywood production these days. And sometimes that's all it takes. That's all it took for me. That and Liam Neeson. :D

YMMV...

The Battleship movie is good fun popcorn entertainment. While no cinematic masterpiece and certainly not an accurate depiction of the US Navy at all, meh. Battleship is a very self aware film, it knows it's a silly action movie and it's okay with that.

Also, these days it's kind of funny watching it when you realize the Picard finale is basically Battleship's third act.

That's a very, very interesting take and I'll never view the Picard finale in the same way ever again.

I don't mind the movie Battleship but it had high hopes. They thought they were going to get a sequel but nup

How about live action Thundercats?

New biopics.... Tom Hanks is playing Abraham Lincoln in a movie about his relationship with his son who died, and Lily Collins is playing Audrey Hepburn in a movie about making Breakfast at Tiffany's.

In other news, Funko, who seems to be on the verge of bankruptcy, has a deal with a production company to develop TV, film and animated stuff.

I don't know.
Any portrayal of Lincoln after Daniel Day Lewis performance in "Lincoln" is going to pale in comparison

I had a young woman in the store last week who, after working for Funko for five years in an administrative role, was laid off at the end of last year.

She said the company is hemorrhaging money and probably won't make it to the end of this year.

Any deal with a production company only drags out the inevitable.
