Re: Teaser Trailer Debunked!
The whole point of a teaser is not to get US excited. We're all either as excited, or as repulsed, now as we will be 'til we start seeing real footage.
A teaser is to get the folks who have no idea that this movie is even COMING to start thinking "hmmm... maybe I want to go see that movie."
In order to do that, it has to avoid Trek cliche's. It has to draw the audience into thinking "that's an awesome movie" before they start thinking "oh, ho-hum, it's another Star Tracks movie... yawn-o-rino!"
SO, I really am looking for a teaser that doesn't tell the folks in the "Cloverfield" auditorium that it's a Trek trailer at first, but gets them hooked through something that they don't recognize, and only SPRINGS it on them at the last moment that they've been duped, and this "really cool-looking movie" is actually Star Trek.
First impressions tend to stick. And in this case... people who see the trailer and say "that looks cool" FIRST will be more likely to go to the movie (and to get their friends to go to the movie).
From a pure business standpoint, you really want to avoid trying to sell this as a STAR TREK MOVIE and instead sell it as an exciting story with great characters... and which just HAPPENS to be set in the Star Trek world.
I expect a 30-second teaser. And I don't expect to see anything specifically identifiable as Star Trek until at least 20 seconds have passed.
I'll be there in the theater, actually, but not to see the trailer (I'm sure it won't give me anything that I, personally, want... it's not targetted at US, guys!). I'm really intrigued by the idea of a Godzilla movie that's not intentionally campy.
