Quite correct. It is entirely mutable.
Go read the Abrams forums sometime. Especially when they were first coming out, it was more jihad than friendly disagreements.
And it was ridiculous and pushed me away from fandom for a long time. And the same is true now.

That humans act irrationally doesn't change the very simply idea that art doesn't need to be treated with religious fervor. Heck, I've had more polite conversations about religion than about Star Trek.

Yes, there were fans declaring fatwa on the heretics, unbelievers and infidels. There is no Trek but Trek and Roddenberry is it's prophet.

You may not see the need to treat it like religion, doesn't change the fact that many do.
