After all, over at that other Star franchise we got 7 seasons of a tv show and 4 movies (and even a series of shorts and countless video games, novels, and comic books) featuring Anakin Skywalker with the audience knowing full well what was going to happen to him.

He's already been written out. Too late for that.

A Star Trek prequel has never changed a character's fate.

They'll just grab him from an alternate timeline if they want him that badly.

Pike's "ultimate fate" was to go off and live with a race of beings who can allow him to exist for an undefined period of time with an illusion of vitality that is indistinguishable from reality... and who have the ability to project illusions far outside their own solar system.

Just as Vina could pop into Pike's cabin on Discovery, post-Menagerie Pike can show up anytime and anywhere the story demands.

I know Anson can't be everywhere at once but I have to admit I was sort of hoping that the Talosians, reading from Pike's mind what happened to Discovery, placed Pike and Vina in cryogenic suspension or something until the 32nd century at which point Discovery unfreezes them, easily cures Pike's condition with 32nd century medical tech, and he and Vina resume adventures with Discovery.

One would hope the show takes advantage and shows us unimagined areas and/or areas that would have been cost prohibitive in the '60s.

I'm pretty sure the Animated Series had a full fledged holodeck and they acted like it was always aboard the Enterprise, just apparently never seen in the original show.

    Michelle Yeoh is calling....

I know her getting a show has been stated but, technically, she feels written out of the universe to me. Hope I am wrong.

    Yup.

One thing. I don't remember exactly what Riker says in Encounter at Farpoint, but doesn't he say something to the effect of having never seen a simulation "this real" before? Maybe early holodecks were the equivalent of "CGI" from The Phantom Menace and by the time of The Next Generation the holodecks had "CGI" the equivalent of modern blockbusters?

That would appear to be putting the cart before the horse. Right now it's the (potential) audience suggesting a happy ending. The writers at this juncture seem quite happy with Pike's fate being "tragic".

    Those two things don't equate.

One is an event about a character that we have seen happen on screen.
We have seen the end of Pike's story in TOS. It has already happened.

This is from left field somewhere in the back of my mind ...

I could see Them doing a story in which Spock or Number 1 end up going into the future for some reason and finding that after spending a length of time on Talos, Pike was retrieved and offered a cure.
Be kinda cool if it was M'Benga that does it.
(also be cool if Pike turns it down)

Which would add another layer of motivation to Spock's actions in The Menagerie.

    I... don't dislike it.

I believe that the issue here is with what it means to be "written out."

By definition, a character who is still being written for, and who will have ongoing adventures written about him for the foreseeable future, has not been "written out" of the franchise, regardless of what his ultimate fate is destined to be.

Asserting the conjunction with a falsehood is just another rhetorical device for saying NOPE.

@Serveaux is 100% correct. Pike has not been "written out" of Star Trek.

    Exactly so.

None of this has happened, at any time or place. It is fiction - corporate fiction, for that matter, and infinitely malleable as it suits the requirements of the IP owners.

Fuck, the Fast & Furious franchise has spent the last three or four movies resurrecting characters who died in high-speed, fiery explosions.

Tell me that the owners and managers of the Trek franchise at this point in history are "aiming higher" than the people at Universal with their sprawling action franchise. I will laugh.

Well, by "written out", I meant we already know what his final fate would be. I also said that there was no reason why they couldn't do seven more years of stories set before his fateful encounter with the deadly radiation. They could contrive or hand wave a cure for a his condition if they wanted to, but what about Vina? Are they going to contrive successful reconstructive surgery for her as well? Pike has his happy ending already. He lived happily ever after. To undo it would be unsatisfying on so many levels.
