Oh, dear God, no!Parts of it are canon now, like it or not, to the showrunner's own admissions. And I fully predict a further (and welcome) embracing of fan-made ideas from multiple sources which can sometimes be better than "official" sources

Need? No, of course not. But this is a show that is designed to appeal to both nonfans, casual fans, and hardcore fans all at once, so there is an aspect to it that requires a measure of awareness of how the audience is going to react. They could have gone either way, and opted to update it for the sake of appealing to nonfans. Which, in my opinion, was the safer bet, because in my experience, ST 09 brought in a lot of casual fans who had passing familiarity with Trek but enjoyed how it looked in that film.Looks like I will agree to disagree with many of you. The exterior of the TOS Connie did not need to be changed or modernized.
Maybe. But, I doubt the production team was willing to take that bet.I’m pretty sure a casual viewer would not care how the ship looks. And of the viewers who would care, I doubt that simply updating the look of the TOS ship (both interior and exterior) but keeping the proportions basically the same rather than making it look completely different, would matter in the long run either.
Maybe. But, I doubt the production team was willing to take that bet.
I think part of it is the fact that they are trying to appeal to the larger audience as well as wanting to put their own spin on it. Distinct but recognizable.I don’t think it was a matter of them placing a bet to see whether it would work. I think it was more likely that they simply had no intention to do so in the first place and just put their own spin on things. Just like what happened with DSC when it premiered.
Which is fine. They clearly are going for distinctive. They have been since they have been marketing the ships and colors. It worked well in TNG/TOS' favor because each of the division colors were distinct and the ships distinct. So, we see that marketing spin. Which, I think, GR would be proud of.and CBS clearly doesn't want to erase the TOS Connie as they still sell/licence merchandise with it.
And making more of it. Anything created under the TOS name still uses the TOS designs.
Like with any other Star Trek media material, the parts that are made canon are made so when they are mentioned or shown on screen. (Like the quick shot of the 1701-F Enterprise that was in the STP S3 promo, and presumably will be seen in one or more episodes). THAT said, in STO, the 1701-F didn't enter Starfleet service until late 2209. STP S3 takes place in 2401 or 2402 -- 7 years before the Odyssey Class was even in any sort of Experimental form.Re. STO canonicity: Parts of it are canon now, like it or not, to the showrunner's own admissions. And I fully predict a further (and welcome) embracing of fan-made ideas from multiple sources which can sometimes be better than "official" sources, the latter whom often demonstrate an unfortunate deficit of fresh ideas.
