The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

I am a huge FARSCAPE fan, and I was thrilled when "PROMETHEUS UNBOUND" first aired. There are some clear homages to Aeryn, but Vala is different enough from Aeryn that they really are totally different people. This becomes even more clear with her appearances later in season 9.

(I only mention this because you are already aware of her returning. Otherwise, I wouldn't gave spoiled such a big thing.)

Gemini...

I finally can say one of my biggest issues is how fucking stupid / naive Sam becomes as the seasons go by. Like old Sam would have never let roboSam on the base, they would have met off Earth. New Sam dates Pete for no reason and let's RoboSam and shit.

And Vala is the best thing about seasons 9 and 10, it's really that simple. She was so loved in that one episode is why she was invited back full time. She has more character growth in like 30-40 episodes than a lot of characters do in 100 on any TV show.

I still like Sam, but you are right about this, on both counts. My only nit on this episode was how it seemed a little quick for Sam to trust her double.

I still like Sam, they 'fix' her in the later seasons. There is one point I remember and I'm like 'Yep, Sam would do that', but she has a rough patch and it's seasons 7 and 8.

Prometheus Unbound (SG-1)

If I wasn't a fan of Farscape and I didn't know who Claudia Black was, I probably would have thought this episode was just ok. I mean this woman is out maneuvering an entire crew that also includes General Hammond might make me go hmmm, but everything that came after that was pretty good. I did however think the hiccup joke wore pretty thin about half way through.

However, I love Farscape, and I love Claudia Black and I thought this episode was wonderful. You run the risk of not being interesting if it's just focused on one of the main characters, but General Hammond being there and the stage presence of Black really makes this episode a whole ton of fun. I loved every scene with Vala and Daniel, especially the fight scene. I will say though it will take me a while to get used to Claudia on SG-1 because if I hadn't known better, I would think it was Daniel and Aeryn Sun on the ship. Black was basically playing Aeryn, maybe in the first couple of seasons. Heck, when she took off the super soldier helmet that scene was basically right out of Farscape's first episode. I'm excited that she will become a regular in Season 9 and hopefully I will be able to differentiate Vala from Aeryn. Until then, Officer Aeryn Sun was on SG-1, and I had so much fun watching that. ;)

Not only does Vala get better I have felt that in retrospect her first appearance almost feels out of character compared to who she becomes. I sort of compare her transition to being similar to Anya on Buffy.

The Defiant Ones (SG: A)

Sheppard, McKay, and two scientists are stranded on a planet where they find a single Wraith survivor. It was a good episode for McKay and John and the action at the end was cool. I don't really have much to say about this one other than I did get the Star Trek 4 reference with the "Everyone remember where we parked" line.

It's Good To Be King (SG-1)

That felt like a Season 3 or 5 episode. It was awesome to see Jack off world again, and we got a Puddle Jumper on SG-1. That was pretty cool. This one was an Ancient Time Ship. We also got an update on Ba'al vs. the rest of the System Lords and it sounds like the System Lords may Lose. Also, this one another System Lord, Ares bit the dust. We also got to see Harry Maybourne one more time. I'm a little sad this was his (I'm assuming) last appearance. It's for the best but he was a fun character.

One of the neat things is how SG1 and SGA were able to cross reference each other and tie in to each other so nicely. There is an excellent Atlantis episode coming up soon in season 1 that will reference that puddle jumper and the Ancient that invented it and give us some nice backstory.

Also you are getting pretty close to "Reckoning Part 1 & 2". The last 5 eps of season 8 are an epic roller coaster ride.

Based on what you said and what @bigdaddy said last night, I'm giving some thought of just finishing off SG-1 Season 8 once I get to Reckoning. I mean you have one episode sandwiched in two two part episodes, and I was told to finish SG-1 Season 8 first. Then I can see the remainder of Atlantis Season 1, start Season 2 to finish the 3 part story, and then start Season 9 of SG-1. That might be easier than navigating these multi part season enders, especially now that I'm close to finishing up each season.

Yes, I would recommend you just finish SG1 Season 8 first. The last 5 eps are super important and wrap up some big plot arcs. Also the SG1 finale "Moebius Part 1 & 2" does have an element that comes back later in the Atlantis finale "The Siege". So it's best to watch the SG1 finale first.

Honestly, that might be your best bet. Not just for spoiler free reasons, but for simplicity's sake. I highly recommend this path.

"THREADS" is sandwiched in between 2 two-parters, but it is such a key episode that it really should be viewed with the two-parters in one shot. And if you have access to the full version, I highly recommend watching that. The shortened version, you'll get the gist and it does flow nicely, but you'll miss a LOT of what makes SG1 so great... the character beats and interactions.

I just checked both Hulu and Amazon Prime and it's the short version. I'm not sure if I can get the longer version anywhere, unless someone wants to PM me with a legal way to see it some place. I don't want to break the board rules talking about illegal streaming though so I will leave it at that.

Just looking at the episode listing here is what I was thinking my viewing order will be:

Hot Zone (Atlantis)
Full Alert (SG-1)
Sanctuary (Atlantis)
Citizen Joe (SG-1)
Before I Sleep (Atlantis)
Reckoning (SG-1)
Threads (SG-1)
Moebius (SG-1)
The Brotherhood (Atlantis)
Letters from Pegasus (Atlantis)
The Gift (Atlantis)
The Seige (End of Season 1, Start of Season 2, Atlantis)
Avalon (SG-1 - Season 9 Premiere)

Then go back to alternating after SG-1's 2 part premiere. It's simple, less confusing, and it might be more gratifying in terms of the arcs to finish up each season.

As far as I know, it's only on the dvd. Hell, when the set came out, I had to send the disc in to the makers to get the full, original aired version because the dvd had the short one.

Well, when I get to the episode then you guys can give me the spoiler filled recap of what I missed. ;)

Well that one episode to me is really part 3 of that story. It's silly. Moebius is a different story which I have a HUGE issue with and you will know what it is when you watch it. But it's important to the Stargate franchise and the finale scene is perfect as it was planned for the series finale.

Yeah it should have been a three part episode. I feel the same way with the season 9 opener, the third episode is different title but to me is part 3.

How do you know what DVD set has the short Threads vs long?

It was replaced fairly quickly, while they were still giving each disc in the season set it's own full-sized DVD case. There was a tiny difference in serial or lot number on the package, but I don't remember which was which. I'd expect all the subsequent editions, the slim-case with the same box art, and the new white box versions, should all have the long one. I'm not buying season 8 two more times to check, though.
