The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

"The First One's" on Comet TV is airing

Another reboot idea. What if the Goa'uld came back in force but now in Unas bodies?

I was actually watching the end of Window of Opportunity last night. It's only been a few weeks since I've seen that episode but it honestly feels longer. I wonder why Comet TV doesn't play Atlantis.

Epiphany (SG: A)

I'm sorry but I was bored with this episode. John walks through a time dilation portal and seconds that pass for the Atlantis crew is minutes for John. We find out it was over 6 months since John had walked through the Portal and the beast that was attacking the villagers was created through their own minds. Ok, that's fine and good but SG-1 kinda already did the crew member gets lost and spends an extended amount of his/her life away from the team. That was called 100 Days and Jack's story was a lot more interesting than John's. I did like the MALP on a Stick thing though at the beginning and Weir getting out of Atlantis is always a fun time. This is probably my least favorite episode of the season so far. :(

I mostly agree though I did like the M.A.P on stick part. I always like seeing creative problem solving on tv and in movies.

Critical Mass (SG: A)

First off, yes I will get back to SG-1, but for some reason I've been feeling in an Atlantis mood today. I guess it just happens.

That's more like it. It was an Atlantis episode with a lot of SG-1 thrown in and for being an episode about the Trust, it was probably my favorite episode dealing with the Trust. There was urgency, Colonel Caldwell actually was a Goa'uld agent, and Cadman came back. I loved all the reminders Sheppard gave to Rodney about having Cadman in his head, and she's a damn good character outside his head too.

I think the thing I loved most about this episode was Teyla got more to do. Ever since The Gift, I've started to really like her character, but I feel she's been pretty much on the side for most of this season. Well, in this episode she got to shine and Rachel Luttrell can sing? Holy cow can she sing and that scene with the ring ceremony while Doomsday is almost about to happen was chilling. I think the last time I got some chills at an actor/actress who started to burst into song was last year when I got to the episode of Buffy where Giles starting singing Behind Blue Eyes. Also, the more I see Beckett the more I really like him. He might turn out to be one of my favorite doctors of any show ever. He's so kind and compassionate, and he does it while taking everyone else's crap.

This was a great episode. After feeling bored with Epiphany, this one righted the ship and it might be one of my favorite episodes of the season. Oh, and the 101 Dalmations and Lord of the Rings references were funny as hell.

I noticed they jumped right into the beginning of season 4 a few nights ago.

There was still 7 or 8 episodes of season 3 to air too

Odd

Grace Under Pressure (SG: A)

There was another reason I was in the mood for Atlantis over SG-1 and it was this episode I just watched. I read the synopsis and it had Samantha Carter in it. Watching this episode, I vaugly remembered this episode was a pretty big deal when it aired, maybe from an advertising point of view or just overall sci fi media point of view.

I am struggling with something. I both like and hate McKay. I hate him because of everything that Carter said, he's arrogant, petty, and doesn't work well with people, and I would add misogynist. I also like McKay because David Hewlett is really a fantastic actor and he absolutely killed it in this episode. From talking to inanimate objects, to his hallucinations of Sam, everything about this episode was great. Hell, it was even funny too when you realize Sam was Rodney's fantasy and some of the borderline sexy stuff was kind of hilarious. He even paid Sam a compliment, in the most Rodney way possible. Some of my favorite exchanges:

Carter: Why else would I be here?
McKay: I don't know! Maybe one last romp before I die.
Carter: One last romp?! Please, we never...
McKay: Okay, one first romp, but it's romping that comes to mind, not your brains, blondie. Now, you've gotta admit, I am a handsome man standing...
Carter: You're essentially arguing with yourself. You realize that, right?

McKay: What are you doing?
Carter: For warmth...
McKay: Y...y...you're not physically here, y...you can't transfer any heat.
Carter: Doesn't mean I can't get you hot!

Ripple Effect (SG-1)

Just curious, was Ripple Effect and Critical Mass supposed to be a crossover event? You had Atlantis being a plot in RE and you had SG-1 being a plotline in the Critical Mass episode. They were unrelated, but considering these episodes air right after each other I can't help but wonder.

Anyway, I enjoyed this one. In fact, after seeing Grace Under Pressure right before this one, I got a good night's worth of Sam Carter. That's not a bad thing ;)

I could have done with a little less technobabble. In fact, I almost feel bad for Tapping for having all the science dialogue because it was kinda hard to understand. It actually reminded me a little of when Terry Farrell first came on DS9 and her saying how difficult it was to spout off the technobabble in DS9's first season. I basically got Wormhole, blast, black hole, and Prometheus going to Atlantis. I loved the switch traps that was going on, and this gives me a great way to discuss something I secretly love about Teal'c. I use "Indeed" a lot mainly because I just love the word and it's probably the best way to agree with something. The way Teal'c says "Indeed" is fantastic. In this one where they were talking about all the switch traps and there is like a 5 second pause and then Teal'c says "Indeed", you feel that.

Nice call back to Sheppard's reaction to the Asgard and now with Mitchell's.

You know how much of an impact Janet Frasier had on the series as a regular guest character? When I saw her in this episode, and then when they were saying goodbyes, I choked up a little. I was originally wondering why they couldn't get RDA for this episode, but that final scene is probably why I'm glad they didn't. It almost feels like they found a way to actually say "goodbye" to an amazing character in a very sci fi way. The embrace she gave Teal'c and Daniel was kind of heart breaking.

Critical Mass sure was a great episode. In addition to everything you said, it sure was fun to see Kavanagh get what was coming to him. And this won't be the last time for that either. Also one of my favourite Ronon moments, when Goa'uld Caldwell taunts Sheppard and Ronon that as a Goa'uld he has the strength of many men, and Ronon responds something like "my kind of fight" and then proceeds to beat the shit out of Caldwell.

Ripple Effect was originally going to foreshadow details from upcoming episodes, though in the end, a reference to a plot point an upcoming episode ended up being edited out for time, and the vague warning alternate Mitchell gives near the end "cut the green one" or however it went, ended up being meaningless due to the episode where it would have been featured undergoing last minute rewrites and that being excised from it, despite it having been set up in Ripple Effect.

Regarding Tapping getting all the technobabble...

Amanda Tapping herself actually went out and researched a lot of the science stuff that Carter spouts out so she could understand it better and make it believable. I always applauded that level of dedication, particularly with such heavy stuff.

I don't mind the technobabble. But I have a background in physics so I understand it. Don't get me wrong, it's still scifi. But the technobabble is grounded in some real scientific concepts.

By the way, the famous episode "200" has a funny scene that mocks bad technobabble.

One of the other elements I liked about "Ripple Effect", not mentioned thus far, was getting to see Martouf again. I was always rooting for him and Sam, and IIRC I thought his death was handled well, but could have been better.

That's a bummer. I thought it would have been forshadowing to the finale or something.

I too liked seeing Martouf again. It took me a bit to recognize him but I was surprised he came back and he and Sam got a nice goodbye scene as well.

To me Carter and Rodney were always great at making the tech talk sound realistic. Right up their with LaForge and Data on TNG and Scully on X-Files, only with her it was medical tech talk.

They do, just not at the same time. They usually show one for a while, and then eventually switch over the other one. I'm not sure if they show Universe, I think I might vaguely remember seeing at one point for a while before this round of SG0-1, but I'm not positive.

Stronghold (SG-1)

I've been liking this development of Mitchell lately. I hope all this bad stuff that's happening to him (Antarctica, his friend dying, the refugee bombing that was an accident) doesn't impact him negatively. It is part of the job but he's seen a lot of tragedy in his life already.

So did this episode forget that Ba'al has clones now or was the one trying to brainwash Teal'c a clone? Despite my eye rolling of the whole clone thing, I hope that wasn't the real Ba'al. I do find him entertaining. I really liked the Teal'c storyline too, even though what will it take for the Jaffa to be free and secure. I mean for being warriors all their lives, they are easily influenced. Now granted they've only known to serve others for generations, but with the Goa'uld more or less out of the way, and with Gerak gone they really need to get better security.

I did like the action at the end. I've actually missed that kind of action on this series and it reminded me of a Season 4 or 5 episode.

There are a profusion of Ba'als. There's always a Ba'al around the corner.
