The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

I've seen it spelled as "Amon-Re" or "Amun-Re" (as well as "-Ra," and, of course, just "Ra"), but I haven't heard it pronounced. I suppose, like Daniel said in the movie, the tricky part of pronouncing ancient Egyptian is the vowels.

Did they get a chance to film their finale before the pandemic shut things down?

Nope, not even close. I heard ther are 7-8 episodes left, some were filmed but need post work that's hard to do from home, others never filmed.

The Intruder (SG: A)

I am planning to finally start SG-1's 9th season, but I wanted to see an episode before dinner and the SG-1 premiere is a two parter. I figured go with Atlantis and then I can start SG-1 tonight.

With that said, I liked Intruders. It was a step down from the premiere, but they can't all be epic. I wish they had focused more on the earth flashbacks though, as I found those the most interesting part of the episode. We got to see Beau Bridges character for the first time (I also remember hearing that he does become prominent as the series goes on) and we got to know various things that happen to Weir and Sheppard on the trip back. Simon breaks up with Weir, and Sheppard got a promotion to Lt. Colonel. I wish we had actually seen the promotion, but that was nice and I liked that Weir stood up for him, even though they don't see eye to eye all the time. It worked in the early seasons of BSG and it's working here, the relationship between civilian and military.

The main part of the episode featured more of the Daedelus, and a Wraith virus that is impacting the ship. This was a basic plot, but there were some fun moments, namely the stuff with Hermoid and McKay (I already like that new Asgard, and I look forward to more snarkiness between him and McKay. The scene where Sheppard is sneakily uncomfortable that an Asgard was on the ship was kind funny), and the battle of the two 302s was great.

Just curious, how big is the expedition now? They got a lot of reinforcements and with the Athosians on the mainland, I was just wondering what is the population of Atlantis. I guess they are all science and military now.

Wouldn't be the first time if you watched the SG-1 first, like it originally aired. :nyah: But to me SG-1 is a three parter, like Threads is the third part of a story but with a different name. Unless I'm remembering the episodes incorrectly.

The population of Atlantis is a good question, I don't know if it's ever said.

I really like SGA S2. The quality is very good and it has some really good episodes. It also continues the world-building and gives us some more interesting info on the Ancients. Watch for the episodes "Trinity", "Aurora", and "Epiphany".

Beau Bridges is one of the new regular actors that came in for Seasons 9 and 10.
Just out of curiosity have you ever watched Andromeda? If so you might get a kick out of one of the other actors who starts a recurring role the last couple season.

I have not seen Andromeda. I heard the series lost its way after a few seasons even though I noticed Pluto TV has added an Andromeda channel to its line up.

Avalon (SG-1)

There's a part 3 coming up but just some thoughts on the premiere so far. I think I liked Part 1 better than Part 2. Part 2 is setting up the Ori storyline, but Part 1 we got to meet Mitchell, go on a treasure hunt, and Carter and O'Neill made an appearance. So far I'm not having any trouble viewing Browder and Mitchell and not John Chrichton. I think most of all is Mitchell isn't unhinged, while John was very unhinged, and it helps that I've seen Browder in other things. What I did like was the new footage of the battle over Antarctica taken from Mitchell's point of view. For one, that sequence in The Lost City was great so any kind of new footage from it is also great. I think most of all it formed his character, a guy who was basically saved by SG-1 and he looked up to them as heroes and wanted to join them.

Vala also comes back and the hair makes all the difference in the world. When we first met Vala, it was pretty much all black hair and I was like, yeah that's Aeryn. With the light stripe, and the humorous, almost child-like personality, I'm going to enjoy watching Black in this new role. Black and Shanks really do have amazing chemistry and I'm glad that's going to be a full time thing going forward. I also was able to fill in the gaps of Landry (Beau Bridges) and he's a friend of Jack and I think he's a mix of Jack and Hammond, maybe a little more strict. I loved his early scenes with Mitchell, especially the "job interview".

As for the storyline, it was brought up a few times in this thread without the spoiler code and now I'm finally here. I've finally met the Ori. I almost get the feeling the best comparison I can think of between the Alterans and the Ori are the Prophets and the Pah Wraiths from DS9. One is evil and the other is good. The Alterans left their far galaxy and came here, while some stayed behind and had a different philosophy and when they ascended became The Ori. So far I'm not really sure how I feel about this storyline but it's still pretty early. It really does feel like the series has shifted from the corporeal (The Goa'ulds) to the non-Corporeal (The Ancients/Ori). That shift was coming in Threads (And what has happened on Atlantis so far. What I am learning the most is the Ancients really do move around a lot, from the distant part of the Galaxy where Daniel and Vala inhabited the bodies of those two villagers, to Earth, to Pegasus, and back to earth.

Overall, it was a good start to Season 9. The show feels pretty different (tonally and in terms of story) though so hopefully I will enjoy it as I move forward.

Origin (SG-1)

And one episode later the Ori are scary as hell. I guess that makes literal sense considering they are fiery, but yeah I'm convinced. They think the Ancients are evil and want to spread the word of the Ori to non-believers or they will destroy them. Also, the Priors look scary as well with the staffs and the white ugly looking faces. This episode made it feel like the series relaunched itself and while Avalon didn't convince me, I think Origin did that the series is in good hands. I'm really excited to see where this goes, and I even liked the ending with O'Neill and Daniel and then taking the joyride in the 302 with Mitchell. There were only two negatives I had about this episode. Mitchell always bringing up his grandmother and no Carter. I wonder how they are going to get Carter back.

I love season 9. It's one of my favorites of the series.

I do recommend watching the first 6 episodes of SG1 before going to SGA.

Not really due to spoilers, but those 6 episodes really tie into each other as though they are one. Best comparison would be the 6 episode Dominion Arc at the start of DS9's 6th season.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I'm going to go back to alternating. I'll be done with the first 6 episodes pretty quickly, but according to the recommendation thing on gateworld, these storylines don't really connect and I'm loving Atlantis just as much as SG-1 at the moment.

Regarding Carter, Amanda Tapping was having her baby at the time. She was pregnant for part of season 8, and she delivered at this point.

I was just coming here to say that. It's the whole reason Vala was brought back, she was liked and they needed a filler for Sam.

The biggest issue I have with the Ori storyline overall is that it's more reminiscent of the Goa'uld storyline in its broad strokes than I'd prefer...an (initially, at least) immensely powerful enemy that can't (generally) be negotated with and that uses technology or what-not to convince people to worship them as gods.

Happily, the particulars are different enough that it usually isn't too reminiscent of the Goa'uld storyline.

I'm really looking forward to reading your reviews of a few of the upcoming episodes this season.

Runner (SG: A)

This episode was one of the reasons I wanted to continue to alternate episodes rather than just binging SG-1 for it's first 6. We finally meet the last regular cast member (That I know of) of the series, Ronan Dex (Jason Momoa). I really liked his introduction. Seems like the Wraith not only experiment with DNA, but if they find someone who is not susceptible to feeding, they put tracking devices in them and hunt them for game. I liked learning about him through flashback and he's military and fights really well.

Ford also returns and we learn that he was infected with a Wraith Drug. His scenes with McKay were funny. In fact, I'm officially changeling my mind on McKay. He really is a funny character now, having some of the best one liners. He still complains a lot, but after getting used to his "style" now, I'm finding I'm laughing more at what he says. He really is the comic relief of this series. I'm hoping now that Ford has ran into the Wraith Beam, we might actually get some scenes on the Wraith ship. We've only seen them from the Atlantis point of view and yeah they are evil but I would love to put a "face" to them, if they are going to be the main villains. You had Apophis, Ba'al, and Anubis be the face of the Goa'uld, I would like to see someone be that for the Wraith.

The Ties That Bind (SG-1)

This episode reminded me of the DS9 episode Treachery Faith and the Great River, only we get to see the actual negotiations to get Vala what she needed. You guys weren't kidding when you were talking about Vala being different than Aeryn. Granted, Aeryn was sexy in her own right, but I think Vala is taking it to the next level. She continues to be the best character this season and I loved the scene where she's takling to the Senator and his manhood and the looks on the committee's faces (especially the woman) were priceless. This was a ton of fun.

I forgot to mention something in the previous episodes and I might as well bring it up here. It looks like the Jaffa are free, but they are struggling to figure out how to keep that freedom and govern on their own. I guess that's Teal'c's story this season, dealing with their new leader, Garak. Not sure how interested I am in that storyline yet, but I am glad they are tackling the issue of you finally get what you want, now what happens.

I'm thinking now I might take @Farscape One's advice and have the next two episodes I see be SG-1. I've met Ronan, and Vala and Daniel are still linked together. Besides, it's only two more episodes.

I can undsrstand the surface similarities of the Goa'uld and Ori storylines, but I think it is more accurate to say it takes the basic Goa'uld premise of posing gods and building on it.

The big difference is the Goa'uld were posing as gods. The Ori, basically, ARE gods. Not only does it pose difficulty in getting rid of the threat, it can make people question whether their own belief systems are accurate.

(I do see the parallels of the Prophets and Pah-wraiths. There are some major differences which I won't go into due to spoilers.)
